Lancer / FTO compatability

Post by Jamie »

Just doing some research and wondering if anybody could answer these questions for me.

-Are the FTO gearbox mounts the same on the manual and autos?

-Will the 6A12 engine and gearbox bolt straight in on the 97 up Lancers?

If you haven't already guessed im researching a 6A12 angine conversion on a Lancer. :) Any information would be great.

Yeah, Ive heard of multiple lancer 6a12 conversions, the mounts seemed to be similar, worst case they might need a slight modification to get them in.

One question though,

why not do a 4G63t conversion or a 4G63 if your a p-plater and then turbo when you get your license.

Couldnt agree more, why not use a engine that has so many off the shelf parts its not funny. 6A12 IMO is sh*t a engine not worth transplanting into another vehicle

I like the 6A12 engine, the mivec mainly, but it's is a good strong block.
Not the most customiseable and recognised engine, but still..

I'm surprised if the CE and FTO are so compatent, there aren't more 4G63T FTOs around. :S

Are u not implying that u think the FTO engine is sh*t??? :( :x yet u have an FTO, im slightly confused? I believe the engine is quite reliable and solid, i have never had a single problem ive known mitsubishi are renowed for slighty weak gearboxes but engines???

yeah i probably wouldnt implant it into another car, but it is not a sh*t engine at all !! especially with mivec, considering when the engine was made and the technology of mivec,

It's all personal opinion in the end.
One thing I do not like of the 6a12 is how sluggish it is down low, requires more throttle than most to get it going, MIVEC is great, when you're near or on it, but it's a putt putt engine otherwise.

4G63 are great cause they just blare with torque and upright power when on boost.
Even my single cam 4G63T is wild with torque and outright power, no delay.

I'd say it's a more dare to be different engine if you put it in a Lancer, just don't expect the car to be of any great value though on a resale.

^^^^ agree

@ fulltilt, yes i love the FTO but not the engine that goes with it, you say its strong well? what are you basing this on? Every FTO owner i know and lot of the ones on this forum all want more power but thats not easily acheivable with this engine without throwing big money at it. So yes i think the 6a12 is sh*t compared to what mitsi could have put in it but hey thats Just MO

The reason I ask is that I need a 4 door car. I have a perfectly good 6A12 in my FTO and wanted to know how easy the conversion would be. This way I end up with a 4 door car and still be able to keep my FTO. This would allow me work on the FTO without a time frame as I will still have a driveable car.

Has anybody on the site done this conversion that could let me know of any potential problems I might encounter?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Thanks for the help anyway guys but for various reasons have decided against the idea.

If anyone is interested I found a DIY on the conversion. Although doesnt go in to much detail the engines mounts seem to bolt straight into the Lancer. Here is the link
