Converting a 95 FTO to auto - prices and advice?
I'm looking at buying a '95 FTO next weekend(already put a deposit down), but as it's manual and I've only ever driven auto I'd prefer to get it converted rather than re-learn how to drive. Anyways, I was just wondering if you guys could help me out please with prices of how much I'd be up for both in parts and labour to get this done. If it makes any difference, I'm pretty sure it's a GPX. In the ad it lists the engine as "6 cylinder Petrol Multi-point injected 2.0L (1998cc)" and the seller did mention it had a Mivac when I went to see the car in person.
Also, I'm in Sydney if that helps you figure out the costs or part availabilities.

That's what my cousin told me. I'd honestly feel more comfortable with auto though as I've got less to worry about so I can concentrate more on the road and traffic. I'm only a new driver so I want as little distractions as possible.MAD-FTO wrote:My advice

It is the right forum. I would agree to learn to drive a manual. It is very easy to learn and get used too. You could easily sell the manual parts on this site cos a lot of ppl are doing manual conversions, and you could use that money to change to an auto/tip.

Instead of spending like a week to learn the basics of manual and within a month you'll completely have the hang of it, you chose to spend a couple of gran just for a conversion? Are you that lazy?
I learnt to drive manual in my car and it's not hard.. if old ladies can drive manual, I'm sure you can too. Stop making excuses about not being able to concentrate on the road. I didn't know some people see with their left foot and hand instead of your eyes.

Damn, I didn't realise people were that harsh around here. Yes I don't really know anything about FTOs, I admitted that in my post on the Newbies board. And I didn't realise it'd cost a few grand, hence asking for help with prices.

First off i do agree with the other posts, if you do want a auto you should probably buy one instead of swapping it out. I would say you would probably looking around the 2k mark but that will vary from mechanic to mechanic.
However if you are set on this car then do try learning to drive a manual first, once you learn it, it is really easier and it doesnt take long to learn you just have to do it somewhere where there is no other traffic around and no pressure you will pick it up quick.

Welcome to the club. Muchacho32 got his converted from tip to manual about 3 months back. Cost him just over 2 K (the parts ended up costing about 1K from memory. I certainly would be learning to drive the manual if I were you though. Much more fun than the tip (ive owned 2 tiptronic FTO's prior to the manual FTO ive got now) and the manual box is more reliable as well.

I know I was being a dick after reading over it, that comment was a bit too harsh, I have to stop taking out my work frustrations on other people.
Although I did think the justification for doing a conversion was a tad silly but regardless, I overreacted. (Gee, it's my day for apologising today huh? I think I need anger management
