CHRISTIANITY: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

What you after? Anti-virus, spyware, firewall?

The usual suspects are AVG and Avast.

I used to use AVG but subscription runs out after about a year. I use Avast at the moment and you need to register semi-annually but it's free coz they're targeting more corporate users.

Downside to Avast is that it flags a worm everytime you try and access the FTO website - yes Ben it still does it.

So you gotta turn off the resident protection whenever you wanna get on this site. Bit of a pain in the ass.

don't we all, hey at least you are responsible, it's not all up to the girls, guys should take some responsibility as well

anyways... more on topic, +1 for AVG, never did me wrong, but it occasionally chucks a wobbly when trying to update. but if it keeps doing that you can always just reinstall it :)

I've used a load of free services in the past, my advice would be to go to your local asian comp shop and buy a copy of "not for individual sale" antivirus + firewall for like $30 bucks. These ones usually come with a new comp with free 2 years of upgrades, but you can buy them individually from the local comp shops.

Free + Antivirus = not worth bothering. As a person that has worked in the home user end of the market fixing PC's, the vast majority of them either had no or only free AV software.

Sublime's suggestion works, or find a few mates who should really update their AV and buy one online that lets you install it on up to three computers. Roughly $80 to $100 divided by three is pretty cheap for some peace of mind.

Also, use firefox and download an addon called "No Script"

http://noscript.net/

When you browse pages, it blocks out all ads and all the bits on the page which calculate things like what you click on for marketing research etc. In fact, when you open the page you'll see everything, if there's java / flash or any ads they'll be greyed out until you click on them to display them. Also, at the bottom corner of the page it gives you a little icon, if you click on it, it'll show you everything that was blocked.. and there's usually about 6-7 things blocked which you never even knew existed. For eg one of them will be "google-analytics" which is google calculating what link you click on that page.

Of course you can unblock any of those thing by clicking on them from the list. It's a good to ensure you can browse the net without worrying about spyware etc

AVG or AVAST take your pick.

Only real difference I've noticed is that avast can slow down your computer if you've got a slow one.

NOD32.

Get the 30 day free trial - then just keep installing it every 30 days.
it'll take like 10 seconds because all it does is replace the license - giving you an extra 30 days of the BEST PC protection there is for free, at the cost of 10 seconds.
