$1000 to install waterpump!

Post by Shahrez »

My mate fto's engine was overheating and we realised it was a leak coming from water pump. So he brings it to a mechanic and he quoted him $1050 for water pump and labour. Is this in anyway reasonable cos somehow I don't think it is. How much would or should it cost? And is possible to install it yourself?

Thats pricey, but understandable. Not a DIY, it buried under the timing belt - which you should be getting them to do at the same time.

That price is probably including a genuine water pump too, you could save a couple of hunderd by supplying your own aftermarket pump.

Thats the one. You could also get it from your local Auto One / Supercheap etc. The pump is common to all 6Axx series engines. Including the 6A12 engined Galant that was sold locally in Aus.

Kempys is also another good option if you can wait 2-3 days for delivery. I think they were about $80 from memory.

i would think $1000 is abit too much? i did mine for like 400 something, unless the water pump cost like 300-400 lol. but afterall, it was a mates friend's workshop so was abit of a hook up

Sweet, cheers for that Ben!

The mechanic gave him a break down of the $1000

1. Yes the water pump is gonna cost around - $350
2. Labour - $400
3. Timing Belt - $220
4. Coolant - $20-$30

So that makes it $1000. Good news is that he got his timing belt changed not long ago, from previous owner, so i guess he can get away with a $90 waterpump, and look for cheaper labour elsewhere?

Thats a ridiculous price for a timing belt.

Pretty sure $220 is what Mitsi Aus charge for a genuine belt (with grey import markup.)

Back to Auto One or Supercheap for a Gates T987 at around $90.
