i dont think S309 is in the AVS range, which is the sportier/premium range... but im sure they are good tyres nevertheless, how much were they
You right G1, I just checked my car, they actually AVID S306, I got them from Japan last yr, so i guess its similar to S306, but its different pattern to the one in OZ, its more like the one in U.S AVID H4s.
I brough them with my BBS rims from Japan for a bargain price so please I don't need someone to tell me about different compond to suit different country......blah blah blah, as i already know that.
Anyway the AVS range rank the best within Yokohama anywhere in the world. So if i'm happy with AVID, I'm sure AVS would be like another level.

G1 wrote:avs db s2, is that the one youre talking about twistea? how much wear are you getting on them?
yep, those are the ones G1
as for wear, i dont know how to quantify that for you G1. i havnt done a tread depth measurement with them. i dont think they are wearing excessively otherwise i wouldnt have said i would buy them again. but anyway, for a performance tyre they are wearing better than i have expected for the driving i have been doing. when i have gone for a quick drive i always check my tyres and each time they have held up to my abuse very well, the sidewalls look good and the surface does not tear or "ball up". so i do not suspect that they are a really soft compound, they are a road tyre after all.
the other reason i really like them is from the feedback i get from them. they are an easy tyre to drive at the limit and they wont suddenly let go, rather, they just push ever so slightly. for me thats what i like, an easy to control tyre thats predictable at the limits. but i would expect no less from a high quality tyre.
many people tend to go with what has worked well for them, and for me thats the yokohama AVS dB tyres. for you or anyone else im sure it could be different.

If you're interested the latest April issue of Wheels magazine have completed the 2004 tyre test. Co-incedently they tested the 205/50R16 which is the standard tyre size for the GPX. Wheels tested: Cornering, slalom, dry traction, wet traction, wet braking and dry braking.
The winner was the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 followed by the Michelin Pilot Preceda and the Yokohama V102.
Judging by the result i'm never going to get Kumho because it got last in all categories!
If you want to know more detail check out the April Wheels magazine.
Well my opinions is purely based on personal experience.
I drove the same roads I've in the past with the previous tyres in the wet, and I found the GIIIs much more capable than the other brands I've had. And wet capability is what I'm looking for. In the dry, I couldn't really tell the difference. But wet performance was my top priority.
Boris wrote:Has anyone had Firenza ST-03's on their car?
I had a look on the web for them, and they don't apear to be common...
Is Firenza a japanese brand? also how do they compare to other tyres?
i have them on my front, and they are falken tyres, they actually handle corners very well, and for the price i can't complain ($130 a tyre)
they do wear out quicker than most other tyres ive tried, but performance has been consistant during its life cycle
you might buy a tyre for double the price, but you wont necessarily get double the life out of them, i give this tyre my thumbs up for people on a budget - i might try yoki's or the GIII's next, i prefer dry performance than wet, as i wouldnt wanna be pushing my car in the wet anyway.. theres too many other idiots on the road...
D-TRAIN how much did your GIII's cost ya and from where?
G1, my little investment cost about 1K including fitting/balancing and wheel alignment. Got them from Jobsons Bridgestone in Hornsby.

How many k's have you done with them so far, and how much tread would you say is left? (front ones im talking about)
if you can get 25,000-30,000km out of them (without rotating with rears)that's excellent... well thats what im looking for.. since my $130 falkens look like they will last about 15,000km with constant hard cornering

i have done about 12000-14000kms on them so far, and this includes a front/rear rotation. i think they still have a good 50% tread left.
I went to Donnellans today... didnt have much time, and the guy wasnt overly friendly in explanations...
I have 17inch AMG wheels 17 x 7.5 with Federals 215/45
I have had the tyres for hrmm 20 months, and about 30000kms, so realli i think they have lasted pretty well, although they have probably been dead for a while! i think I paid about $165 a tyre. they were certainly superb when I first got them etc....
Anyway, thje guy at donnellens suggested these three tyres for a middle of the road tyre......
Hancook K102 @ 185
Potenza G3 @ 255 (mikeys tyres...)
and the last one, i think is 'nexen' is that a simex tyre? @ 165
anyone got any thoughts on these ... ive already read good reviews from people about potenza,, but i guess id like to spend closer to $160-$180 a tyre....
Without knowing a lot about those specific tyres, my advice would be to ring a few places, explain to them how you drive your car and what you want from a tyre and get their recommendations.
If you find multiple places recommending the same tyre then take a serious look at it. Getting multiple opinions will also help avoid the margin / commission bias that can influence the tyres they recommend.
i can't put 45 coz it will touch the guards, too low

i picked up the potenza GIII this week for $190 each x 2 for the front 16" stock wheels
so far in the dry they have been outstanding, i havent tried in the wet yet... but i'll take D-Train's word for it
they also had something called star performers, which is actually made in england by Avon or something... for $150 each i could have got those, and they were recommending it actually but i wasnt too strapped for cash so i went for the sure thing... coz i know from what i heard that they are good.. i wasnt disappointed
btw i picked them up from eagle tyres in Granville, i think full name is MK Eagle Tyres or something

thats really cheap mate.... I think If i could get them for that price, I would buy them.... but I have only had $255 so far, I will ring around in melb.
Im thinking I might stick with federals, the ones I have now did last well, and had no issues at all for the first 20 clicks.

$190 for 16"s. Wow. Now that's a reason to stick with stock rims.
I paid $234 for 215/45. This was the cheapest I found after doing the ring-a-round for the GIIIs.
The other brand/model I was contemplating were the GD3s. The price for them was abit dearer at the time and not many places had them as it was still a relatively new release then.
They are good G1, but I hold no responsibility for your wreckless driving
one guy really recomended the goodyear f1 tyres gds2, said they were cheap at the moment, about $179 and although not as good as the new gds3 were a lot cheaper... i was close to saying ill go with that but instead
i rang goodyear and the guy bagged the gds2, said they were noisy, bad wear and bad quality....

With the preformance tyres we're going for, I don't think you're going to be in the quiet and long wearing range. That's my personal opinion. With lower profiles, softer compound tyres and general use is going to differ from your standard passenger car.
But as for a Goodyear dude talking negative about the quality of its own product, that's just unheard of! You definately don't want bad quality tyres when your safety is dependant on it.
i rang the first guy back, and he said, was this at the "ringwood store, and was the guys name .... " i said yes, and the original guy said..... I dont know what he is on about, for the price and product you are getting a very good tyre...
i decided to ring another branch of goodyear, and this guy also said the f1 were great value.....
maybe the guy who was negitive about them, was just trying to upsell the new model ..

ignore that guy and get those tyres...its what i run on my stock rims, and trust me, they go well...theyve survived a track day(if it was only 2/3rds of one) as well as many a spirited drive, and for anyone whose come on a cruise shall know that im not slowing down for lack of grip
Im happy with them for their wear and grip, and they are cheaper than what i could find potenza's for
Right now I have kumho ecsta supra which ive noticed were on a lot of cars at my motorkhana place.
For dry they are pretty good, (they were the tyres I ran my 14.6 pass on and 2.1 , 60 foot time) well good in a straight line, but found my cornering slightly suffered as opposed to other tyres I had before, (some weird jap tyre I can't remember). Often sliding out a lot eariler during motorkhana and on the street.
However, in the wet I find them awful. just driving normally I am ultra cautious paranoid wreck as they seem slip and slide with even a slightly wet road.. not cool! (I can do mivec 3rd gear wheel spin... not cool! )
anyone here got Fulda tyres or heard much about them???
Bob Jane import them, made in Germany.... I know the ones I looked at were silica and only $190 a tyre,... which is well priced when compared to other silica tyres....
I guess I probably trust european tyres etc.. and these are a goodyear owned company I think....
I know my rear tires are down to their last 5% tread. and considering i drove over a nail yesterday I am going to replace them. My front tyres look a little worn too, but i think they have about 55-60% tread left....
The question is, I am considering putting some F1 GSD3 on the car, but can i get away with just putting two new ones on the front wheels and moving the 60% tread to the back? or would it make more sense to just get 4 new tyres....
I guess the fronts do most of the work, and there will still be tread on the rears as well... but not as good quality tyres of obviously as much tread...
