Shredded my belt...again

Hey, sorry ive done a bit of a search for answers but i need my car in 2 days, so i thought id just ask as ive obviously got no time to source parts.

I had my alternator belt along with heaps of other stuff replaced only a couple of months ago... i managed to shed it and i think the power steering belt as well

Does anyone know where i can get the parts from and where i can find someone to put them in that won't charge me a kidney? The problem is i just dont no the part numbers or if i can get them...or for that matter anyone thats open right now

Any help would be much appreciated

dam mate that sucks you should be able to get from repco etc tommorrow.

As for the reason maybe your pullys are not lined up true? or belt too loose and jumped off or even pullys or tensioners are buggered

I'd be checking your tensioners first though if it's only been a few months I would suspect the belts were not done up tight enough.

It is easy to fit yourself if you need the car that quickly, just get the belts from repco and put them on and tension them up. If the belts squel you need to tension them up more.

You'll probably not be able to find any mechanis open is all.

If this happens again in a few months something is definately out of alignment. Was it only the belts replaced and not the tensioners? One of the tensioners could have gone.

If this is not it and you have new tensioners I would assume that you have a similar problem to what I experienced.

I think I have mine sorted now by changing the main crank pulley, I think my old one was showing wear and was wobbling a bit as well as being of a different shape then the one I have on now. You might be able to get another crank pulley from Dstocks if you ask nicely for a reasonable price

If you need the car quickly though I would start by just putting new belts on. Do a visual check that everything lines up when you do this and make sure there is no movement in the idler pulleys (the tensioners). Once you get under the you'll figure out which ones are the tensioners. Another thing that stumped me for a while when I first starting doing this myself.

TIP: Crack the bolts on the tensioners before you start adjusting them, they won'y move if they are done up tight.

Ok, firstly, thankyou very much for all the help, i went and bought both the belts 2day and im going to try and put them in 2moro with someone thats put belts on before... only prob is they are both 5mm to small, but i was told that wouldn't be a problem... It was all i could get.

So hopefully with help from the guide, everything works out

not a problem mate. Tis an easy job. Once you've seen it done once you'll easily be able to do it yourself in the future if they go again.

The first couple of times my belt went the stripped part of the PS belt took out the alternator belt in my case, this might be what happened to yours. Might be no problem with the alternator belt or tensioner at all.

5mm in length or width? In any case as long as it sits in the channels of the pulleys it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah ive been told the job isn't to bad... but i must say there's not a lot of room to move in the engine bay. Should be interesting

5mm in length, its the right belt as far as fitting a the pullies but its just a little bit shorter then the correct one. I've been told by 3 different people that there should be more then 5mm of play in the tensioner anyway, and so it shouldn't matter

Yeah you will be fine. We tried fitting a 50mm shorter belt on mine for while thinking the other belts were too long. Just resulted in the belt screaming it's head off when it did move.

You will need to jack the car up to get to the PS belt tensioner if your car is lowered. Do on mine anyway. And undo the Alternator tensioner with a ring spanner. They should all be 14mm nuts so that makes life easy. The adjuster for the alternator tensioner is easy to adjust from on top with an extension. Oh and an easy tip, if you could be bothered, take the drivers wheel off and you should see that you can take of the inner gaurd that protects the belts by removing a few clips. Makes the job 100% easier with no lack of room if you do this.

UPDATE! + need more help

Ok so ive got the alternator and PS belts off and put the new PS belt on. However, the tensioner pulley for the alternator has a chip out if it (see pic below), and it has a rather sharp edge... as well as that the nut holding it on is stuffed and the only way to get it undone without completely rounding it was in a table vice... god damn mechanics doing it up stupidly tight

... u don't want to no how long it took to get the frame work holding the pulley off

So after all that im up for a new alternator tensioner pulley (and a 14mm nut, not a prob

)... does anyone no the part number, where i can get one or if its the same as the pulley on another car (say a magna or something).

Repco said they didn't have it and it would have to be a genuine mitsu part... thats what they said about the belts before i gave them the part numbers

... but i did see that they had pulleys for most the other mitsu models...

yea the nuts not a problem but if you can't get a new pulley just get a fine file and round of all the sharp edges around the broken edge. i did that to my crank pulley and no problems.

The problem continues...

The other day i replaced the power steering and alternator belts and the alternator tensioner, took the car out for half an hour and everything seemed fine. The next day i went to manly and 5 minutes after i left from manly heading home my battery light came on and i heard the familiar chewing sound under the bonnet. I pulled over only to find it looked nearly exactly the same as last time it went, the alt belt was absolutely destroyed and the power steering belt was holding on by a thread.

This is becoming really frustrating and im starting to get quite worried as i have a defensive driving course coming up in a week and i dont have a car

Has anyone got any ideas? Any help would be really appreciated

sorry man i havent read all the other post so i maybe just mentioning what some else has.

Its shredding cause one of the pulley's is wobbling. It doesnt take much, it can even be invisable to the eye.

Apart from the belts what have you replaced?

well i would be guessing without looking at the car but one of two things is happening, either the crank pulley is out (thats why your shredding both belts) or one of the pulleys for your p/s belt is out, which is then rubbing on the alternator belt and pushing that one off too.

so where does that leave me... buy a new crank pulley?

btw when checked over the belts after putting them on, the p/s beit was running so smooth it took me a sec to register that it was moving. The alternater belt was not quite as smooth but nothing really out of line or suspect

Btw simon did u have a look at the pic i posted of what was left of the p/s belt... i don't no, but maybe theres something there that can help diagnose the problem. Or maybe just wishful thinking

If both belts are jumping there pullies, that might mean something is axialy out of alingment like maybe the altenator is not bolted in fully or is loose and therefor the face of it's pulley is not inline with the others. It will be on a slight angle If you know what i mean. You can check that by placing a steel ruler or straight edge across the face of the pulley and it should line up with the other. check all the other units as well, power stearing aircon etc.

Checked all the pulley's alignment and i could find anything out. I also checked for play in any of the pulleys and i didn't find anything there either... ive got a 4pk belt on the p/s in a bid to try and save the alternator belt if the p/s belt tries to through again (no doubt it will soon)

Im thinking at this point im left with 2 options:
1) Replace the p/s tensioner and hope that its the problem and that this fixes everything

2) The car goes to a mechanic.. which at this point if they deduce its the harmonic balancer and insist on mitsu parts, i'll have to sell my eyes

So now for question time at the zoo

1. Is it worth trying to replace the p/s tensioner in a bid that this is the problem?

2. Is MD366344 the part number for p/s tensioner and does anyone no the part number for the harmonic balancer?

3.Does anyone no a mechanic that wont charge me through the arse to take a look at my car, 2nd to that perhaps one that will accept non mitsu parts and has maybe seen an fto before?

Sorry for all the questions, im just starting to come out at a lose as to what i can do. Im also becoming desperate to get my car working again

did you check the alignment from the alternator to it's tensioner? It looks as if the alternator belt is jumping a rib and then pushing the power steering belt off. but yes change the tensioner if you can although i don't think the chip out of the side is causing the belt to jump.
