ok Last advice request
Mechanic has picked up a gear noise that he reckons is on 4th and 5th. Those are the gears I use most and I was running what I think was the wrong gear oil. Though it was the oil Penrite referred me too. I can't pick up any noise so I'm not sure.
If it was noise from those gears would it be synchros?
If it is what will happen as the synchro gets worse?
I will be getting a Exedy clucth in it by June, is it worth getting the box out and re-conditioned then?

yeah that is what is sort of dawning on me after the recent discussion about mechanics.
I'm going threw a few up here. Can't seem to find a good one. It went to this place after 3 requests to other workshops to give it a full service. I don't beleive any of these places gave it a full check, though every time the car was returned with reports that it was in really good nick. I was a little happy that these guys had found anything at all though I don't really know if I beleive the things that they need to replace. Especially after they quoted me about $800 to do the clutch cylinder (with me suplplying it), replace the steering rack boots (again I'm supply them, thanks to Kempy's). and the 2 inner VC joints with a wheel alignment, started ringing a few alarm bells than so I thought some other advice would be good. So thank vipfto, exactly what I was after. I think I'll take it to another mechanic mate I trust, though he doesn't really want to work on my car. He's turned into a wimp who only wants to do old ladies oil changes
With the gear noise, do you think they are just trying to pull one over on me then? Cause I haven't heard it and the new oil I have put in I am really liking, as I said I haven't heard the noise. The oil that came out wasn't even very black. Maybe I'll just wait until I do the clutch and in the mean time try and get another mechanic to take a look at it for me.

could be oil....
seeing as your carhas only 80000kms maybe you should see other mechs? with all the probs you are listing maybe he is trying to take you for a ride
All the gear cogs are on the one shaft too, a little hard to say that its only happening to 4 & 5th... and how often are you redlining 4th & banging it into 5th? Not much chance of syncros then either..

yeah that would be never since I've owned the car. So are you saying they are probably full of sh*t and I should just ignore them on that point Ben?Bennoz wrote:+1vipfto wrote:syncro will be noisy when you change gear

ummm didint really read the other post but synchros usually make gear changes rough and clunky.

Yeah, that is what I thought when I had a think about it. It's not, very quick and smooth with the motul oil I have in it now.
Would I be right in thinking if the oil is good and the synchro's are good then the gears themselves can't make noise unless they are missing a tooth, which I would think would have a hell of a noise and would be rough?
