Purchase Second FTO for Parts....

Hello,

I was thinking... in the long run it would possibly cost me less in replacement parts if I just purchase a damaged FTO and use it for parts instead of getting the part indivudually.

Have not done much at all on my car although it will add up.
Hub / Bearings $500 Fitting $380
Suspension $800 fitting ?

It will need a replacement gearbox one day or perhaps sincro.

Any recommendations on scrap yards or anything for parts?

Well first off it all depends on how much you pay for the wreck. Im seen ppl want some pretty ridiculas prices for smashed fto's in the past especially now that they have dropped in value from when i purchased mine.

Now lets say you find a wreck and it is resonably priced, you have to ask yourself what you intend to do with your car. Me personnally, if something F^&k's up, I would upgrade it with a aftermarket product, as apossed to just replacing with a factory second hand part. But if you are going to keep your car standard then buying a wreck (as long as you have somewhere to park it, not sure about yout state but in QLD it is illegal to park an un-registered car on the street.) would not be a silly idea.

Now obvisouly there are some parts that you wouldnt upgrade eg windscreen.
So make a little list of things that you could possibly use, do a cost up and if it works out more than the wreck, buy it.

Yeah all makes sense to me, I guess getting parts "when" i need them I would not have to outlay a heap for a spare fto. And if I can get better aftermarket products I would prefer that anyway.

+1 to what I8AFRE said, plus don't forget there are a lot of things you will want to replace with a new item, either OE or aftermarket, depending on what is available. For example with wheel bearings which you've said you just replaced, you aren't going to want to fit second hand ones, they will just burn out faster then new ones so what is the point.

For me I'd want new or at least resealed or rebuilt parts for anything that is going to be a wear able item. That being I'd want it as new as possible if it is going to wear out so that I know I won't have to replace it again for the entire time it takes to wear out from new, not the time it has already been worn out fitted to another car.
