Using Galant AWD?

Post by FtoSam »

Gday guys…

I know another AWD thread, but this time im going a bit different… Rather then the usual EVO4/2/7 etc discussion, im talking about Galant running gear.
A concern that I’ve had is there is no evidence of the EVO gearbox actually bolting up to the 6a12 engine… I just haven’t been able to find one that’s been done… its all theory…

However I have witnessed a couple of 6a13tt engines bolted up to the FTO manual box… all havnt had a drama. So im a little more confident about it.

Aside from that, I’ve already confirmed my interest in a 6a13tt box that Bennoz is holding onto for me. So that’s a definite.

Running gear wise, I’ve got a guy in Brisbane that’s got an entire VR4 Galant including chassis and running gear…. Looking at $3k for it, so sounds like a good deal…

My main concern is that all my research has been based around welding up an evo 4 rear floorpan to the FTO… I do not know if the Galant one will fit…

Im assuming because its custom anyway, its got about the same chances. But im trying to limit any chances of things going wrong, as they inevitably will.

Does anybody know much about the compatibility of the FTO + VR4?

I really think it may end up being a case of buying all the sh*t for it, and just taking it to a race car fabricator and saying “Make it fitâ€

I remember coming across a site last year where a guy was lucky enough to import an fto with an evo motor, which used the fto gearbox. If i have time later I'll do some searching around for you. Can't remember what country the car ended up in though as well.

I always thought the evo and fto, being based off the same platform, the floorpans wouldn't be too much different but you'd definitly know more than me with the research you've done there. Just another thing to think about though for you is that the vr4 has a longer wheelbase than the fto (i.e. the galant's more closer to the size of a magna).

sh*t thing is there used to be a performance shop called Charlie's motor's at wooloongabba who I.M.O. knew evo's better than anyone else. They did lancer conversions as well. Head mechanic closed shop now and has gone to predator but the guys a fkn genius.

By the way, does the guy with the complete vr4 have an engine?? I may be interested in taking that one off your hands

nah no engine...

And predator no longer exist either... went under a couple of months back...

APC are too busy to take on a project like this...

and regardless wether i go EVO or galant, the tailshaft will need to be shortened...

So i suppose that is not an issue...

Thers a couple of FTEVOs on the FTOOC site Ben, why dont you try posting there for som einfo on what running gear they are using? They are all FWD though but I', pretty sure they are using FTO boxes.

Have you asked Mike Vine?

I've just had to turn down the rear floor from an EVO 3 which I reckon would just about slot in perfectly, wheel base is nearly identical and the rear trailing arms are the same except the EVO has different hubs welded in obviously.

I was thinking Sams route too, 6A12 engine, VR4 gearbox and transfer case, custom prop and EVO 3 rear subframe and tank.

But the wife came in and says she will probably be out of work by Chrimbo

Ah well, next year then
