Auto mechanics ripping motorists off

Post by zuihoujueding »

They have reports on the govenment, petrol kiosks and motor finance wizards ripping motorists off. Just wondering if Current Affairs or Today Tonight did any reports on investigations on auto mechanics ripping motorists off?

Mate why isnt there legislation to protect from heaps of things....... simple answer is theres not enough resources to police it (all the cops are too busy handing out speeding fines).

How many times do see on programs like today tonight etc doing articles on con-men and scammers, who they investigated over and over again. These ppl are ripping of old ladies etc for HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars and very few of them get prosecuted.

Its not about legislation, its about all businesses abiding by the rules set out by the Department of Fair Trading - and the consumers knowledge of his/her rights.

Its what can be proved, not what the police suspect is happening.

Racing in a VL is like being in the Special Olympics, coz even if you win, you're still a RETARD

Today Tonight and A Current Affair are NOT reputable news programs. You don't need the Chaser crew to tell you how pathetic these shows are. They present a one-sided, biased and heavily skewed argument within every segment they broadcast and their pieces about scammers and con-artists are almost comical attempts at journalism.

Their reporters consistently harass and disturb people, often wielding no other proof then the testimony of a dodgy looking bogan, or an old lady, desperate for someone to talk to.

These programs are aimed at viewers to provide entertainment value and deliver people a mild sense of empowerment through watching 'bad-guys' get their just desserts.

Ugh, sorry, I really hate those shows and I struggle to see how anyone could take them seriously.

Hey, i couldnt agree more but all media news are like (just not as bad). I was just using today tonight as an example. Read the paper, watch the news, the same stories are throughout that too.

So, are you trying to tell me that, convicted con man peter foster, who has ripped off hundreds of people, is just an innocent man, who has been harrassed by the media.......i think you will agree that he's not and he appeared on today tonight.

I didnt say "hey guys watch today tonight, its full of riviting journalisim that has to be the truth and not biased at all."

All i was saying is their are plently of area's (in society) that have little or no protection to be ripped off, so you need to be smart and even do a little homework and as ben says, you need to know your rights as a consumer and be willing to fight for them.

Of course you are right when you say Today Tonight does air stories that contain strong elements of truth, I was simply generalising to make a point when I implied they did not. My main concern is not entirely with the strength of their arguments within their segments, but more with the way they present them to viewers. Sorry if you felt I was targeting you with my rant.

Anyway, I believe you're right when you say there is little focus on consumer protection within Australia these days. Either have an excellent knowledge of your rights and how to use them, or else risk being taken for a ride by anyone out there looking for a dollar.
