Exhaust

Post by Fulltiltorgasm »

i recently had my car serviced (97 gpx), i was told it would be a good idea to consider replacing the stock exhaust system in place of a new one, i have read some old threads on exhaust/mufflers, i live on the gold coast, wondering what exactly i should be looking to get and any particular good places to get it done at ???

cheers

He could well have just been telling you to do it because the stock system is pretty sh*t, as it were.

It could be getting old, but even if not, it's still restrictive and you'll get decent power gains if you replace it with an aftermarket piece.

But think about whether you really want it... he wants you to do it so he can have more of your business, but if you don't see any need to replace it then wait until it's absolutely necessary (like... won't pass road worthy anymore).

What you need to do is consider how much you want to spend and whether you want loud or quiet.

IMO, optimum pipe size is 2.5 inch. Do not go any bigger than this as you will actually hurt HP. Personally i would use mild steel as its way cheaper than stainless. There would be only 2 reasons why i would use stainless 1) Its a race car and every bit of HP matters 2) its a show car

Next you need to choose whether you want headers (extractors/exhaust manifold). These are around the $600 mark and IIRC you would be looking at around 5kw gain (ben maybe able to clarify this) Well worth the money if you can afford it.

Next will be your muffler, cannon and/or resonator setup. Cannons are mufflers that go at the end of tail pipe (out the back of your car, like what drifters have) If you want a cannon you will need a resonator as well, otherwise it will be too loud.

You pretty much need a resonator on the majority of setups (its a small muffler also known as hotdogs). If you choose to go with a muffler instead of cannons then choose a good brand. Dont get the cheap ebay brands you will regret it.

Then get yourself a high flow cat again good brands not cheap and nastiest.

Last thing if you have gone with a muffler then you'll need to choose a tip. Remember bigger the tip does not increase your d&*k size lol

Another draw back with the mild steel is that it's prone to rust. Definitly cheaper but depending on where you live and how much rain you'll get will be a consideration.

Another thing, if you're getting your system and you're after more ponies, take your time and save your pennies and get the extractors and spend your money on a good cat.

One more thing, amacha has a fujitsubo s/s exhaust in the for sales section. Definitly worth a look mate
