So i know some of you here are very techy so i will post this here for help....
I bought a 2gb Toshiba usb today and my windows vista doesnt seem to detect it when i plug it in. The first time i put it in it did detect ittand installed the drivers for it, but i have never been able to access the usb. Everytime i click on my ocmputer to try and access the usb the computer freezes and only when i remove the usb it goes back to normal. I have tried uninstalling the driver about a million times and then reinstalling it.
Im pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the usb cos it works on the other computers in my house...also my sisters usb works fine on my comp.
Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to fix this ? i am very confused...and i have done a million searches online but all the info is the same and none of it seems to work.
Please help.

You plugging it into the same port as when it first detected? (ie, USB 2.0?)
Also, try reinstalling the drivers and restarting the computer..vista still has a few bugs, and does tend to be a bitch every now and then..so a restart might just be all thats needed.

If none of that works, try plugging in another usb device so it picks that up, then try the stick again..as above, vista can be a bitch like that.

one of my computers has temperamental usb ports, i find swearing a lot doesn't really help but it might make you feel better
how old is yours?

Yes i have tried restarting the comp a few times after uninstalling then reinstalling. I have tried other usb ports but nothing happens when i put it in.
Basically the system does detect the usb but it freezes when this happens. When i unplug it i can see the drrve in my computer for a split second then it disapears. It doesnt appear when i just plug it in.

2gb drives are cheap as chips these days, just save yourself the bother and buy a different one (completely different brand).

Failing that, shaft Vista and go back to xp.

Did you download the service pack for vista? I had a similar problem though it didnt want to install mine but the service pack is quite essential for vista as it resolves a lot of issues.

reformat the drive on another PC, uninstall the drivers on your vista, then try again.

Also, as above, do you have SP1 installed?

failing that, i agree with above..just buy another one.

i know they are cheap and i dont care about paying for another one....but i was wanting to know whether the problem was my computer or the usb...because it works on windows xp...but doesnt work on my vista...and no, i am not going to change to xp.

Jono - all USB devices need drivers of some sort. It's just that a lot of common devices have drivers included with Windows, so they seem to be 'driverless'.

Harry - you could do some of the suggestions that other people have made, it all depends on how much effort you wanna go to in diagnosing the problem... just that personally I wouldn't bother unless every USB stick you have doesn't work in Vista, in which case you'd definitely have an OS problem.

Fair enough Nicholas....i have tried another usb but it does work...im pretty sure its something wrong with the version (v2.0 - according to the net doesnt work well with vista.) the other one i have is v1.1 which does work on my computer but i dont know how to downgrade the version of my one to make it work. I have made sure i have Windows service pack 1 with my vista, and made sure everything is upto date.

So..that USB drive doesn't run USB 2.0 with vista?
throw it out and buy another one.

no, as in 2.0 is not compatible with vista according to some nerd websites.

thats a load of crock. USB 2.0 is compatible with vista. My vista is running fine with an 8gb usb 2 stick as all usb sticks should be these days. The reason why it didnt want to install drivers was because i didn't had service pack 1. Is your USB stick vista compatible? That could lessen some pain.

Nah, I know you have service pack 1. Hmmmm even if you uninstall the drivers you do realise they are probably still in your registry (as remnants). Unless you want to mess up your comp i wouldnt go down that path, but this is quite surprising though. Have you tried this usb on another vista comp?

If it works then you know the problem is on your comp. Or download the drivers for the usb from toshiba to see if that fixes it.

Actually what is your comp as it may need manufacturer specific drivers for it. Take for example my asus laptop requiring video drivers from asus for its nvidia graphic card.... but then again mine is a laptop though..

I have vista, this is what happens - I speakers stop working whenever I update my sound drivers.. I have to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall the old ones for sound to work again.

Eventually it self-updates and then I have to uninstall and reinstall but yea, this is just the way it is - Probably the same for you. If it read it at one point, you had older drivers which were compatible, where now it's not working because after you updated them, it somehow doesnt work - Try reinstalling the drivers from the disc you originally got with your motherboard when you bought the PC

Vista is pretty f*cked.. I've given up trying to understand why sh*t dont work.. i just know it doesnt

Vista; theoretically should be the best Windows yet... but who would believe it?
