Owch! Clutch and Master Cylinder

Post by Grue »

Ho Chaps...

Got in my car today, and no clutch! Managed to get it to my local Mitsi garage (who normally arnt too pricey), and they're telling me I need a clutch kit and a clutch master cylinder. All up with labour and parts, they want $1200 and change. (Something like $490 for clutch kit, $300 for master).

Thoughts and suggestions please people! My bloody 100,000km service cost less than that!

There should be a rebuild kit available...... we just had ours done (Clutch Master and Slave) and that combined wasnt that much. I have no idea of the part number - Unique Auto Sports in Sydney did it, John had to ring around and ..... errrr.... discuss the issue heatedly .... with a few places before they coughed up the info though...

Good luck

Cheers

That's an option.

I don't mind buying a new clutch if i need one - it's just that the guy working on my car has me a little worried. The cluch fluid was leaking out of the slave cylinder, and yet he wants to replace the master. And the clutch itself seemed fine until it lost all the fluid. I'd have thought I just needed a new slave, or am I missing something here?

Geez mate, firstly the price you listed for the clutch kit will get you an exedy sports organic racing clutch!!! I've managed to get a seller that's quoted me 220 for exedy standard clutch kit and 365 for heavy duty sports tuff as well. Includes thrust bearing too. Pm me if you need any help mate. Will organise the shipping with him and what not or just pass you on his details..

As far as having no clutch, if your slave cylinder is stuffed, the clutch will basically feel like it's not connected to anything. It'll be light as a feather and do absolutely nothing.

If thats the case just get the slave cylinder recon'd or a new one installed. It's not too much of a bitch. A way to determine if its leaking is to pull the boot back, if it leaks then it'll need to be resleaved but also may be other problems with it.

    Hope that helps mate.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Cheers matey. Needed to know I wasn't just being stupid - been working for the last 40hrs straight, with a quick 3hrs sleep in there somewhere, so brain isn't quite 100%.

Will get them to replace the slave and go from there.

Yeah, thats an old skool scam. Slave throws a seal & all of a sudden "you need to replace the entire clutch assembly." Assholes. Got my last slave from Kempys, was about $120 from memory.

I had my clutch seals redone for my '95 gpx because they were leaking. Gave me about another 8 months of use. I've decided to replace them totally rather than reconditioning because it's just not cost effective.

Ordered in a clutch master and slave from camskill which I've just received:
    Slave - $88.87
    Master - $141.82

Prices converted from pounds not including shipping.

Garage has agreed that the master cylinder is ok. They'll do the slave today and see how she goes. We'll be able to see what the cluch feels like after that.

They've always been really good in there. Been going there for 3years, and they try this now... grrrr

Do I need to quote the part number for the master and slave cylinder when i enquire about them?

Edit: Actually is it possible to just buy the seal for them instead of the whole cylinder? And their part numbers if they have them.. Thanks

You can buy a seal kit, but chances are it'll fail in 6 months after you refurb it.

You wont get a new slave cylinder with an engine swap, you might get another second hand one if the engine supplier was too lazy to take it off. Considering the cost of the seal kit is about $30, you should also have the slave re-sleeved if you are going to use the seal kit, then compare all that hassle to the cost of a whole new unit at $70...

    Your call though. Part numbers:
    Whole new unit - MD747418 or MD770676
    Reco seal kit - MD972780 or MD997838

Ummm can anyone help me with getting the clutch master and slave cylinders? How do you guys get it so cheap?

    Mitsubishi are ***holes
    Master: 300
    Slave: 262

I live in Vic but i don't mind ordering online from overseas or paying to get it delivered (But i would prefer to visit the place if there is one in the eastern suburbs of melbourne). I just want to drive my car already... and being a uni student i can't afford to pay Mitsu exorbitant prices.

www.kempys.co.nz ;) It will only cost $10 postage from NZ too. The kiwis are lucky in that the FTO was sold legally via Mitsubishi dealers over there, so they dont get hit with 'grey import markup' prices like we do.
