Why do people like it? Because its cheap is has enough power and fuel economy to satisfy people, its RWD and even the top spec model is extremely good value for money when compared to other cars. Takes the XR6T as an example. Find more power for less when new. Go on.

FTO's are great, theres nothing better than coming back from the shops at 7500rpm knowing that every time you do its not costing you the earth in fuel. (Poor GT-P drivers lol) However, different people have different tastes.

Also, its 'Commonwhore' ;)

Always referred to them as crummydores myself. And having owned one in the past only adds to that. The only decent one I ever had was a Holden Barina GSI, and thats imported (Opel).

when you're going to criticize someone for their spelling/grammar.. make very sure you don't make obvious mistakes or else you just look like a fool

not trying to stir anything up but.. I read halfway through that then gave up, cos it really start giving me a headache.. grammar / punctuation doesn't have to be perfect, just readable.

Anyway - You can't criticise people for what they like, people out there "hate fto's" but that's their opinion, try not to think too much into it.

I think I got most a gist of what this guy is trying to say. Just like everyone said it is cheap, and it's hard to find a car with decent power at such a low price.

I'm guessing (without sounding too biased) is that it really still comes down to the little boy 'who's got the bigger engine' factor and that's their selling point. They prey on people who only care about having a massive engine completely ignorant to the fact that anyone can slap a big engine in any car without bothering to see how it drives.

Eg. Take a Mercedes/Audi with the same displacement as a Clubsport and I'm willing to bet the Euros will tear it apart around a track. A good example would be the yanks who slap massive displacement engines in their cars and only get a tiny amount of power, or when they finally get one with decent power, the car has poor driveability. The Dodge Viper and Corvette are great example, loads of power...if you can get it off the line with their suspension systems based on horsecarts used in the dark ages.

You know it takes finesse to build a car that is tuned in all areas and not just the engine. Mitsi did just that with the FTO especially when you read stuff like this:

The real revelation is the chassis. So benign is the balance that it's difficult to tell which end is driven, and only a standing start on wet tarmac actually confirms it's front-drive. You can commit to corners at absurd speeds, working all four Bridgestones for all they're worth. It really is sensationally neutral, with terrific high-speed damping, and even when you manage to get the FTO sliding it does so all-of-a-piece.

What I really don't get is why people see the Commonwhore as a sports car when clearly it's a family sedan with a body kit? 8O
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Thanks for the easy to read passage!

But personally, i found the FTO has really short 1st gear and it sound so loud that people around will be wondering, how come the car hasn't move much after all the noise, but actually the tacho only shows 2000-3000k.
Thats why people have the misconception on these breed of cars as show cars.

I did skid the whole car when i was trying to outrun a commonwhore at the round about as usual. They will always brake very early and i'll just jump into the turn. Works everytime! They are too scared to turn hard as they are aware of they car weight.

The FTO ain't neutral feeling...wtf =/ Push hard and it unders, almost always. I do agree with the fto's handling being quite good, even up to today.

Everyone knows the current mk5 golf GTI's right ? Bit faster than an fto in a straight line, turbo torque and so many magazines rave about it's awesome handling... then look up best times best motoring have managed to lap the golf gti and an fto around tsukuba and the fto wins hargh hargh. I miss my fto now =(
