Slow GR tip, what to look for?
Hey all i dont know if my GR tip is slow or normal, but ive never beaten a >EF Falcon 4.0L or a >VN 3.8 Commodore. Is this normal?
In a tyical drag with a commodore, i lose a lot in the starts, becuase of the narrow FTO power band. By about 60km/h im probably two care lengths behind, and slowly get to about 3 car lengths over 100km/h.
I can sort of keep up with a 3.8 Buick if we drag from around 80km/h.
Its just from a standstill where i lose most.
If this is normal, i'll except it i have for the last 3 years. But if it isnt what should i check out in my engine?
I have changed fuel filter, oil, oil filter, platinums in rear bank etc.
thanks

To help put this in context.... Some questions:
How old is your car?
How many kms on the clock?
What sort of condition is the engine in?
Any mods?
Who services your car? (you, general mechanic, performance mechanic)
Do you consider yourself to be good at launching?
Are you dragging off drivers who know what they are doing?
Are you dragging off manuals?
Have you dragged off another FTO, if so what type and how did you go?
Are you manually shifting or going full auto?
What sort of condition are your tyres in?
What type of petrol do you use?

I can relate to a VN Lexcen 3.8L, which is the same as the VN Commo in my tip GPX and we were even all the way 0-400...
the 2nd time round he was smokin his wheels at 4000rpm and launched to get ahead by only half a car length...
launching with brake on 2 get the revs up to 2-2.5K helps but not by much, not much u can do in a tip

well I recall Kev mentioning earlier that the best he could manage in his GPX tip from standstill to 100 is somewhere in the 10s... that's the tradeoff with having a tip auto i guess - you cannot really launch like a manual...
perhaps you could get a slightly higher stall so you can launch from 2500-3000rpm perhaps? a bit more engine mods should also help, but best to get some sort of dyno figures first i suppose (just so we can establish if the car is in a healthy state or not).

Also with my mums EL i can beat all my mates commodore, VN, VR, VS, VT.
I tried my mates non turbo skyline very quick launch cause of manual but i overtook him at around 80. But i think he is a bit of a crap driver

i have no idea, i think its a bit of a freak? always services etc.
The falcon is meant to be slower off the mark but quicker to 100 km/h than a commodore, but for some reason the falcon gets off better and is a couple of cars ahead when we hit that mark?
I just came back of coburg i dragged a manual silvia 2.0 dunno if it was turbo or not but i beat it easily?
I think the falcon has a bigger cold air duct?? i have no idea. Its just a I6 nothing special i dont think?

i dunno about the sr20's..that u guys saying they are slow arses...
i think its all about how good the driver is....my frend drives a SSS,trust me..its a killer.plus he knows how to drive his car..he's got only minimal mods like breather mods...i even race him with mah fto gr..with breather mods aswell.and i lost.. i know im going to loose anyway...hehe..and plus its a manual..so yeah....
i dont think its all about KW figures or power..i think theres more in torque and drivetrain..
just my 2cents....

I took on few 3.8L supercharged VN, & i'm nick to nick all the way as well, so u should able to beat a standard 3.8L, unless he mod his car & no one can tell from the outside.KillaFlop wrote:I can relate to a VN Lexcen 3.8L, which is the same as the VN Commo in my tip GPX and we were even all the way 0-400...

Well i think it also depends the condition of your FTO (eg; tune up, regular service......etc)GPXXX wrote:well I recall Kev mentioning earlier that the best he could manage in his GPX tip from standstill to 100 is somewhere in the 10s... that's the tradeoff with having a tip auto i guess - you cannot really launch like a manual...

im not sure why your cars are running slow, steves got his tip running pretty quick, maybe you should put your cars on a dyno see what its pulling and have a look at the air fuel ratio, and also possibly the condition of the driveline/gearbox.
I found my biggest let down was my clutch letting me down by around 15kw. How many kms has your cars done ??
I dont know why everyones having troubles with commonwhores, i have left many vx v8 ss and statesmans to shame 0-100 the ss's start to gain at 80km/h+. but v6's are not a problem.
Another problem i have found take offs are tyres, always put good tyres on and keep tred even, because of the torque curve in our cars, you need to be able to launch at high revs with min wheel spin otherwise you will get bogged down in a sh*t launch, also between gear changes i get a lot of wheelspin which many cars have got a big gain on me, I lost to a ss v8 when i had poor tyres but a quick change of shoes and i was ahead, so never overlook the extra $ on some good treds

maybe i should bring mi car in 4 a dyno, because yea, i thought a VN Lexcen would b pieca cake but found out otherwise... their low range torque is suprising
there could b smfin wrong with my car as everyone who drives behind says it gives off a strange smell, maybe too rich fuel mixture???
any decent dyno places in syd?
