Mobile Speed Cameras

Post by MR2YEN »

Does anyone know what the laws are in terms of mobile speeding actions, where they hold up a camera at the side of the road, for NSW is?

I was driving through a 50km/h quiet street around 6ish, the street was totally dark and i drive past a parked truck and straight after it like 10metres in front of it was two police cars and 2 lady officers with a radar gun. I brake straight away when i saw them and was doing 45km/h, but i don't know if i was over the limit at the time they took the reading. I thought they were meant to give some type of warning like those little signs, i drove back slowly to see if their were any signs along the ground 100metres from the spot, but there were none. Also the street was so dark, and it was like they deliberately parked behind the stationary truck just so they could hide behind it. When i went back i parked 40metres behind the truck and saw all the cars brake immediately onced they had passed it. I also took some photos and a video if i do get a fine.

My question is whether they have the power to do what they did tonight? Like no warning and hiding behind the truck on one of the darkest lit streets.

yes they can do it and no they dont need to put out the signs as there are the big signs all around the place telling you that there are speed cameras used in nsw or this area.
as for you etting done they would have pulled you over if there was two cars so you will be ok :D
hope that helps you.

You most likely didnt get a fine because as aza said, they would pull you over. The radar only reads speed, not your number plate, therefore if you were over the limit you would have been chased down the street.

Speeding is speeding and hence it doesn't really matter when they hide behind a truck or use a invisible helicopter!

Cheers aza and harry, knew those signs that say police targeting speed in nsw would get me one day lol, because when you see those you know that their isnt a fixed camera nearby.

If they were using the hand-held technology (could've been laser or radar, doesn't matter) then you're fine because they've gotta pull you over on the spot.

There are also now 'mobile' fixed speed cameras operational in NSW; these are usually a 'fixed' speed camera installed inside a ford station wagon parked on the side of the road.

If you get done by one of these cameras, the process is the same as for any other fixed speed camera; letter in the mail about 6 weeks later. Which is pretty sh*tty because you don't associate the transgression with the punishment... but that's revenue raising for you.

:D
HeHeHeHeHE We have had those for years here in Vic, and it translates to pure and simple.
DON'T SPEED ,DONT PAY A FINE .This sure as sh one t works for me
They dont just use Falcon wagons either.
They use almost anything with wheels including push bikes ( with a hand held receiver to a car further up the road to stop you.
Hope this sheds some light to what N.S.W is heading towards.

Yeah mouse, completely agree.

I never speed in melbourne cos it just isn't worth it. Currently in NSW I'll take my chances; there aren't that many fixed-mobile cameras around, yet... but of course it'll go the same way as Victoria.

Which is bullshit, really, cos whereas you guys only cop 1 demerit point for 0-10km/h over, we lose 3 times as many points.
