Result of Inspection

Post by Boris »

Hey all,
As some of you know, i was asking about NRMA inpections before.

The car is the Silver FTO, which you can find here:
>> http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... pic&t=1636

I have the results of an inpections, and i need some advice on the results, i will list the critical things that i'm worried about and also what i think about it, so please correct me if i'm wrong.

>> "Excessivee oil leak from engine - oil / wetness at various engine adn transmission areas" - this i don't know much about, but i've read that it could cost up to 2k??

>> "Discoloured clutch fluid, fluid leak at clutch slave cylineder" - This one also i have no idea about... :?

>> "Excessive knock in suspension / underbody area" - Could this be the same problem i read about in some thread from before, like the bonet or something....

I'm am very worried about the first one, the engine oil leak. But the car is pretty cheap, so maybe it's worth it. Any suggestions, ideas would be welcome.

Having had the experince of getting a car inspected by the nrma for the first time, i can agree with what some people have said about them, that they are to narrow, and unspecific with their expection. Sure they inspect everything, but i couldn't get anything specific from the inspector. So maybe i will go with SVC next time...

Just keep in mind FTOs are notoriously bad leakers.

Bring the car to a mechanic and see what the cost of repair would be, and bargain your price from there (if the condition on the rest of the car is ok with you).

But I think as long as the car is not visiably dripping on the ground, it shouldn't be too bad.

Knock in suspension seems to be common among FTOs as well. Could be the bushes need replacing. Again work that into your bargain price.

Also, get a history of service of the car. That way you can see what fluids were changed at what intervals.

my car was leaking oil when i first got it, turned out to be perished cam seals.... the mechanic explained that a coin size drop of oil on the ground is only one drip, and that obviosuly watch the oil levels in the car, he said the main problem with oil leaks is that it can spray over other belts etc in the car and cause big problems. having said this i drove my car with bad cam seals and leaking oil for over 20 000kms....
if it is your cam seals that need doing, they are only $20 each but the labour is a LOT LOT MORE, and when they replace cam seals they normally go about doing everything involved with the 100k service as they haev to get the engine apart to get to them,

this oil leak is pretty common on the FTO, labour is about 2 days so its only worth doing when you do a major service (unless its a very bad leak).

i personally know this car and its owner and whilst i haven't seen it in a long time it used to be looked after pretty well.
