I know you said you didn't want to muck around with video editors, but do a google search for Video Shrink / video shrinker or video re-encoding / converter or similar..
Most are very simple to use, just select the input file give the new video file a name & click to convert it.
You can even convert a 1000mb video file down to 5mb if you wanted .. I used to shrink movies down to about 30-120mb or so to play on my phone .. I'm sure you could probably put them on your camera to watch on the train or something too. & the quality still remains pretty good on a really small screen

when you transfer it to the computer can you transfer it as a different file format?
or maybe you should change the settings on the camera to make it record in a lower quality video.
