How do you and others you know, feel about these forums?

Post by ruchi »

It seems that nearly everyday I read a message or receive a PM about what people think of these forums. Many of these remarks talk about people feeling unwelcome or not wanting to participate as they have seen others, who do participate, get attacked. :(

While it is nice to know that I am not alone in wanting to make this forum a better place, it is very disapointing that things have got so bad and have reached this point.

As I said in another thread, as often happens, it appears that the issues are mainly caused by a loud minority, yet the result is effecting the quiet majority.

One of the people who did not feeling comfortable publicly commenting on this issue any more, due to the attacks, suggested I put forward this poll. This way people can silently cast their vote without need of writing a message and without fear of reprisal.

I would like to thank that person for coming up with this concept, and welcome you all to have your say on the status of these forums.

NOTE: the purpose of this is not to create more tension, but rather to get a proper understanding of what the quiet majority feel, so we can take notice and move forward in a more positive direction.

Please cast your vote, and if game, have your say by posting a message.

Where we go from here well i'm sure 2/3 of you would know how i feel about this already... 8)

Ever since I joined, this forum has been a great source of information for me (sometimes entertainment too  ). I think the recent "debates" have only escalated because sometimes comments are taken too seriously and way out of context. However, these debates have not soured my experience of this forum! Nor have I ever been ridiculed or offended by anyone. When someone with little technical know-how (like me :D ) posts a question, I have not yet seen them getting alienated by anyone.

Just my 2c
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

I must admit i've offended few ppl in the forum, let me publicly APOLOGISE to you all now, as i don't mean it the way it came out.

Hmmmm, maybe we're taking it a little too far the other way =P

Trust me, these things to happen, it happens in a lot of car forums. (I'm an inactive admin of the MCCR forums, if anyone knows those forums, you would know the amount of sheer crap is there =) )

Any car forum does have its friendly (and not so friendly) banter, it's the nature of the community.

What I suggest for people on this forum that the threads outside the gibberish corner should stay on topic as much as possible. If an issue does come up and it involves only two people, PM should be used. If it involves a group, a new thread should be created.

The number of times people had to skip sections of threads because people were just piss farting around is probably causing people start to move away from this forum, as information is getting diluted in crap =)

Oh, and people. Don't be afraid to state your opinions. Everyone is getting too worried about offending people at the moment, it's not a good thing for everyone being so reserved, opinions don't get out that way. That doesn't mean you can start attacking someone personally, but if you have an opinion and have an urge to voice it, do so. Most of us are adults now, taking criticism and differences in opinion is part of the territory.

Anyways, I haven't voted, honestly common sense should be the guide because seriously, if you're worried about new people being rejected, you're asking the wrong set of people, most of the active members have been around for a least half a year, and a lot of us aren't newbies =)

hi,

ive been a member for awhile now and im practically on everytime, except for weekends...
i find it very informative..
i read almost every post, and try to contribute as much as i can...
sometimes i read a post and take it the wrong way, im sure that person who wrote it didnt mean any harm, but just sounds offensive...
so i guess we just need to watch what we write, use the preview button, read it, and if you think its gonna offend somebody rephrase it so it doesnt sound as offensive...
well just a suggestion anyways, thats how i do my posts.... and i think its gonna help in reducing the friction on this site....

cheers

ruchi you seem to know what your talking about, and your information is extremely important! so keep it up, im sure your confident with what you know, therefore simply ignore those who frustrate you.

if someone critisices me in my job (without merit, or invalidly), I choose to ignore them, as i am comfortable with what i do, and know that the remarks of Ill a few ill informed people means little to me! I suggest that maybe it will save you a lot of heartache and frustration if you let it be....

some people are sh*t stirrers, take montoya in his press conference yesterday.... you have 2 choices; ignore it and move on, or keep pursuing something that will only fuel them more.

I think the forums are working well, just a few posts have caused some issues. lets just move on and get back to improving our cars!

enjoy your long weekends!

I joined up over a year ago, before I bought my FTO and I find these forums interesting, useful, sometimes annoying, often funny - but then isn;t that a reflection of life in general? Especially when you get a diverse range of people such as we have here.

I don't like people having a go at each other - after all - we all share a common interest... the cars - but if someone has a go at me ... well.. when I first started working I did telemarketing..... you get a thick skin.

I don't manage to get on as often as I would like to read all forums due to work commitments and a lot of the behind the scenes work in organising club stuff. However, I am also here to listen if anyone has problems/ comments/ things they would like bought up but don;t want to post/ suggestions etc... etc...

Hi everyone,
As a quite member who has enjoyed these forums for almost a year now I just wanted to ad my support for this forum. First of all I think we all need to be thankfull that the moderaters do not need to put up with the level of abuse from younger 'children' that can get on these forums just to start fights, that happens on other forums I have been on. Secondly I think everyone needs to remember that this is a public forum and so essentially, you can be prosecuted for defamitary (don't think I spelled that right, lol) comments. SO I think that some people need to step back. On the other hand the Gibberish Corner is there for a reason, and if you don't like the banter that goes on there, well, don't go in there, easy.

I joined this forum half a year ago. I found it great from information point of view and most members(active ones) are very helpful.
I feel sorry to say that lately, this forum is not as constructive as it used to be. There are too many unrelated or off-topic being typed in. Personal attack and things like that. Other than being a long way to be defensive(because of manly behaviour maybe) in the wording, there came someone else to be middle man, and some came for taking side to one side and another. Plus, interested parties, like moderator and administrator, they have to redirect the topic, back on track. And what do you think the author him/her self feels about this, as well as other readers. I dont want to talk too much about this. It maybe a repetition of what others have mentioned.
Personnally, I leave behind things like, as you all can see, when i posted my opinion eventhough without any supporting data, and i started something like: I think this... and that..., and this guy replied with "you dont actually know..." and start picking up any single mistake u made. Come on! this topic is not about win or lose. Obviously, he wants to say he is right. But, I dont care, let them say what they want. No point to argue, a waste of time. (***should i swear here?***)
That is only one single example. Not worth to mention more.
To conclude, I definitely will stay less time on this forum by skipping all the craps, than i used to, till i find it more pleasant to read and share ideas. Or probably won't bother to visit this forum.
To vote, well, seems like i should tick 5 out of 6 variables above
Take it easy everyone! Cheer up! :D

Hi guys,

i joined back in 2002 and its a alright forum, i think it could be allot better if there wasnt soo much opionated statements about our backgrounds and choices(ricers, track ect), rather more informative statements on tech, ICE, styling ect.

I think this forum is good for sharing information and experiences about our FTO's and we should keep it to that, maybe a bit of Net socialising if there is such thing. haha

i dont see one group or person who is at fault for the recent arguments that has been going on. Its our problem.
i think as a club we all should try better not to offend or be offended.

one thing i would like to see is more project cars, its good to have UAS designing new stuff, but maybe we could approach other companys like RPW ect ect and get them on board with FTO AUS.

Now that would be cool

hi guys,
i've made this topic a sticky as it is very important to me and the committee to ensure that we meet the needs of as many members as we can. Our goal is to meet everyones needs (and i want to be perfect as well).

the areas we need to work on as a whole as i see it from current feedback are.
  • Threads need to be kept on topic - this is as much a individual user requirement as it is a moderation issues

People need to be more considerate of others and understand that sometimes people are simply stating an opinion. This opinion may be wrong but doesn't mean they should be flamed for it.

Appropriate use of language, and i'm not talking about swearing. There is no need to abuse someone because they are wrong, even if they are wrong do yuo really have to tell them? especially if its only an opinion or an "i think"

Moderators being more active. Whilst not wanting to create a police state we will be more active through the forums. As we are all "grown adults" most of the moderation will happen privately if a moderator feels that his/her requests have been ignore a more public form of moderation may be required
what have i missed?[/list]

i agree with everything you said steve, i know we all dont want mikey going around nuking messages like a nazi, and i dont really see that happening, as we have all learned from this.

i simply think that from time to time when it is obviously neccesary like that "how rare is rare" thread, a moderator does need to take some actions, of course making it as subtle as possible.

Found this site before i got my FTO.....soo many people - lots of knowledge to share. I usually dont even pick up on the crap that flies around as i usually look for things that take my interest, and try to share my own knowledge where i can.

And topics that stay on track... all the better. Now did i need a XXXX or Pale Ale, cant quite remember.... qld'er in SA..... hmm.... bah any coldie will do.. :P
