Timing Belt

Hey everyone. I've had my car for a good 6 months now, but I'm worried over the fact that I have no idea if the timing belt was changed at 100k or not. I bought my car from a dealership but there isn't a history on the matter. Its now run through 130, 000km and I bought it at 120. Is there any way I can physically check if the timing belt is running thin or the last time its been replaced? if it hasn't been replaced, we could have an end of a fto on our hands

btw, I drive an fto GPX mivec if that helps. Thank you in advance peeps.

If you're not sure just get it changed. Gates belt T987 - cost about $120.

Its the labour that will hurt though. The will cost substantially more than the belt. A 100K service with timing belt change will probably come in somewhere near $800 (cant remember if that includes the Mitsubishi belt price or the Gates belt price though). If you shop around, you will find MUCH more expensive quotes and if you are lucky, you may find cheaper.

I was in the same situation as you.
For piece of mind remove the front timing cover, a five minute job and inspect the belt. Check for any surface cracks both inside and outside of the belt. Check for any fraying along the edges. And get your finger nail and push into the surface of the belt. You should be able to make dint in it and it should spring back out straight away. If all of the above are good then you can sleep well tonight.
Any others might want to make a comment here.
But if at all in doubt change it.

I changed mine after 140000. The belt looked fine until I took it off saw a few cracks and stuff.

Thats what I meen. you got to look good and hard. Even to the point of giving the belt a bit of a twist to help expose any cracks.

Isn't the 6A12 an interference engine, valves>pistons~###
Gates have an uprated 'R' version belt I believe, probably worth the extra bucks.

for some reason i bought mine for $89.95.....from auto one..even Mayan from Maytech got charged $119.95...weired..
