Auto trans dramas....HELP!!!

Post by TRY12 »

Hoping someone can suggest something here...

Got a GPX FTO with the 4spd triptronic auto. When I bought it (cheaply off a mate who was moving and needed to sell quickly) it was slipping when changing gears. Basically revs up in the gear change. Doesn't slip at all once the gear is selected.

Anyways, I suspect a faulty box and get a replacement from the wreckers. Install the box, put the proper Mitsubishi oil in.... the the bastard does the exact same thing  :?: :?

Am I just extemely unlucky, or could there be something else causing this particular problem???

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Cheers, Ant

I doubt that you have exactly the same prob with another box have you checked the error codes???? PS you may be able to sell that box to someone on here if its all good as i think there are a few ppl looking for a 4spd tip.

Did you change the torque convertor at the same time cos when my drive went I changed the box but it was the TC  It was also behaving eratically but mainly in the 2-3 gear change region

yes, torque convertor was changed when the trans was swapped.

error codes... engine light has been on since i bought the car. did the error code check and came back as 32 (Vacuum sensor), which i have replaced, however light is still on. I believe you can also do an error code check on the trans..?? (havn't done this).

no don't have a spare auto trans ECU sorry... could this actually be the problem?

It definitly COULD be the problem. Did you reset the ecu after fixing the vacum sensor.

just reset the ECU (disconnected battery for approx 1 hour).

am still getting an error code of 32 (3 long and 2 short flashes). no error code on the trans (N light just flashes constantly).

really got me buggered....

Where are you from? Would suggest taking it to Joe & Rick's @ the Gold Coast .. or another qualified mech..

or ... Check the Workshop manual ;)

page 90 Ref 13A-17

Probable causes:

~ Malfunction of the vacuum sensor - You've ruled that out
~ Improper connector contact, open circuit or short circuited harness wire of the vacuum sensor
~ Malfunction of the engine ECU

Test & physically check the wiring & connectors for the vacuum sensors, check the connection for the ECU is plugged in correctly, check other wires under the dash are plugged in properly. Check fuses if applicable.

Borrow an Engine ECU to replace with temporarily if possible.

here is the rest of the workshop manual page & troubleshooting steps to follow to determine cause of the prob:

Hope that helps :)

thanks for that!

currently downloading the workshop manuals, will get my mechanic mate to have a look this weekend...

I'm at Upper Coomera... If everything checks out ok, i'll see if anyone local has an ecu i can borrow to test :)

Have spoken with the guys at Rik & Joe's... They think it could be another faulty trans, however just a guess (havn't seen the car or driven it).

i'm at ormeau, just down the road so I don't mind popping round to give you a lend of my ECU if your mech mate can't find anything on the weekend. I've never taken out my ECU before though .. just got J&R's to do it all for me when I needed to test mine but I might be able to figure it out ..

Do the easiest first! When you last change your oil? If say in the last 2-3 years pull the dip stick and if your oil is black and smells burnt, your covertor is obviously stuffed.

UPDATE!

Well after stuffing around for ages I decided to just take the car to a local auto repair shop. After explaining the problem they thought it would be something electrical (causing the auto to select neutral between shifts). Rang me up today and said that they think its the trans ECU (all sensors tested out fine).

So... Guess I've gotta source an A/T ECU from somewhere... Any ideas of what sort of $$ these go for??
