Dont fear i dont think youve blown the box! How many ks on the clock? If it has done above around 170000 theres a very good chance the torque converter has spat it.Good news is they are only about $200,bad news by the time you pay for labour youd be looking at around $1600 as it is a prick of a job on any fwd car.

Positive since that "chug" is the gearbox engaging to the engine,if the torque converter is broken you wont get that chug. The gearbox doesnt actually engage to the engine but ive put this into laymans terms.

You could do it yourself but its a bitch of a job.You need to remove the gearbox and probably the engine mount too depends on the car some of them require the whole motor to be removed.Access to a hoist would help too as lying flat on ya back trying to lift a gear box into place is not much fun(they may not seem that heavy, but try lifting the gearbox flat on your back with no room to move :x ) Ive done it once with no hoist and ill pay someone next time.Good luck!
