Need Help Installing new stereo

hay guys, i have a 1996 GPX and i removed the old double din stereo and am installing a new kenwood single din stereo and have cut the wires and so far hooked up all the speaker wires correctly and at one stage had the power wires hooked up correctly aswell and was all working good but the map lights wernt working or the door beep when open and the remote central locking and the clock all wernt working but the stereo was so i tryed to fix the lights and clock but now the stereo doesnt work either.

so the question is how do i wire up my stereo correctly and i have seen diagrams that tell me what wire colours are what and it says that the live constant 12V wire is the red / black stripe and its little were as the blue accessory one is a bigger wire and on my stereo it says connect the stereo accessory wire ehich is bigger to the live but that doesnt make sence connecting a big wire to a small wire. and what does the green illumination wire do as mine is not connected to anything and also what wire is the clock for and there is a cluster of wires that comes out of the old stereo that doesnt fit anywere in the new stereo and i think that has to do with the lights and clock.

i will try get some pics up to help you out as i am not very good at explaining but i did my best so for now all the help you can give qould be greatly apprieciated.

So no fuse's blown? i had to pay to get my FTO wired up... i couldn't under stand what colours where what, they didn't match up!

hay guys thanks for the help but i managed to do it my self and yeh i checked the fuse box and 2 fuses were blown the radio one and the room lamp one, so i hooked the illumination wire(green) in to the blue 12V accessory and changed the fuses and boom all good so now ive got a professional install by a noob, and the cluster of wires i was talking about ended up being the old CD changer cord.

But yeh all good now and im very happy with myself and if i knew what had to be done at the start it would have been a lot easier so if any one is thinking about doing this, it is quite easy. Give it a go. it only ended up costing me $5.50 and that was for the new fuses that i blew.

hay guys i have now encountered another problem, well the first one isnt that much of a problem, its just that everytime my car is on or the egnition is on the dash lights are on as if i have my headlights on and if i do have my headlights on, the stereo will stay on even if the car is off and if the car is off and i turn my headlights on the stereo will turn on aswell. does any one know what this is from, and also after wiring up my stereo every time i would push my clutch in the revs would go almost to zero and sometimes it stalls, and i was to talking to my apprentice mechanic on the weekend and he said that it must be the electronic idle control, so does anyone know which wire is the electronic idle control.
any help you guys could give me would be greatly apprieciated.

First off, without seeing exactly what you have done i can only guess, but sounds like you have all the wires mixed up. Disconnect your stereo, check all fuses. Do you have a test light or multi meter.. If not, i dont know why you are doing this yourself.
It sounds like you have somehow wired your stereos power supply to the headlights (im guessing maybe the power from the cigarette lighter lights (the little one that glows around the cig lighter)

As i say disconnect your stereo, does this fix the problem?

It so f%&ken easy should take you no more than 30mins to wire it with a test light (or multimeter) or 1hr if you are soldering the wires.

This might help you out;

What do the different colour wires do?

These colours are as checked on '95 GPX. Double check power connections whenever possible with a multimeter. ISO harness adaptor is Â£7.95 inc VAT & carriage from Niche (01285-860865)

PERMANENT 12 VOLTS RED/BLACK
ACCESSORY 12 VOLTS BLUE
ILLUMINATION GREEN/WHITE
EARTH 6mm NUT
ANTENNA TRIGGER PINK TO POWER UP THE REAR SCREEN ANTENNA
R/L+ SPEAKER YELLOW/BLUE
R/L- SPEAKER GREY/BLUE
R/R+ SPEAKER YELLOW/RED
R/R- SPEAKER GREY/RED
F/R+ SPEAKER WHITE/RED
F/R- SPEAKER BLACK/RED
F/L+ SPEAKER WHITE/BLUE
F/L- SPEAKER BLACK/BLUE

here is a link to the wiring harness / adapter - but it sounds as if you've already cut the wires & attempting to connect em all up that way .. so it might not do you much good..

Think you've stated your problem here...

The illumination wire is to make the cigarette lighter socket, light in the ashtray, etc. light up.

The blue 12V accessory wire is the circuit that is active when the key is kicked over into the accessory position.

You have connected the 2 circuits together so that when one is activated, both are active.

Disconnect these wires from one another and problem solved...

hay guys, thanks heaps for your inputs and no i dont have a vault metre but i figured that the illumination wire was connected in the wrong place i had it connected in the 12V accessory(blue) wire but it had to be in this other wire that i figured out, but it all works now, the dash lights only come on when i turn the headlights on and the stereo turns off with the ignition and the cars revs dont drop down past about 700 rpm when idleing, so im happy.

hey man im just trying to save you from an expensive lesson, if you are going to continue to do electrical work yourself, but a test light (probaqbly about $12) or a voltmeter about $30, if you blew your stereo you may not have been covered.

Better off getting a pro to do it if you're not sure how ... or if you know someone who knows how to do it, get them to teach you as you go along ..

check your fuse you blew something up hahaha

i did it to mine same thing nothing is working bit good old 10amp fuse will fix it

hay guys, my new stereo has been working all fine until i put in the single din pocket tray in, now it heats up soo hot that it stops playing after a bit and i dont know why its doing it, i dont thinks its because of the tray caus its all plastic except the bolts that screw into the bracket thing but i havent tryed it again without the tray in, and as soon as i plug the harness or loom watever its called into the stereo it just heats up to like finger burning in about 1min.

and i dont think its cause of the ground wire cus thats all secure and was working before.

so does anyone have any suggestions, and i will try it without the tray this arve.

Sounds like a short to me. Did you make sure you insulated all the wires you joined together (insulation tape/plugs). If two wires are connecting that shouldnt, that could cause the problem. Putting in the tray may have been enough to push the wires together if thats the case.

there all taped up but maby theres one that has a bit of wire sticking out and maby thats causing the problem, i will un-wire everything this arve and wire them back up again....damnnn.....and then i will see how it goes.

hay, i have un-wired all of the speaker wires and re-wired them but the stereo is still heating up, so i will un-wire and re-wire the power wires this arve and hopefully that will work but if anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly apprieciated.

My suggestion to you is to go down to your local stereo shop and have them install it for you. If you keep going the way you are now, you'll probably cause permanent damage to your headunit.

Worst case senario of a poorly installed stereo would be:
Live wire touches bare metal in the car, sparks start a fire in your car. 5 minutes later, your car is written-off.
