Side Light Problem

Post by CoximusPrime »

Hi guys,

I've got a strange problem with my side lights (think I probably caused it).

Basically my side lights don't work at all (either of them), I switch my lights to the first interval, my fog lights come on "dipped" but the side lights in the main cluster (next to the main beam bulbs) don't. I'm not sure if the fogs are meant to come on too, they always have since I got the car but I'm pretty sure that the side lights came on too.

A few weeks back I did have a main beam bulb out that I replaced, though the bulb I wasn't quite right (it have 2 plastic grooves instead of 1, so I cut them off to make it fit :( ) it worked a treat for a short while, then it stopped. When I checked, the blub must not have been making a good connection as there was a hole burnt through the connector!!! oops!!! ... So when I fixed that, I realized the side lights aren't coming on.

Anyone got any ideas?? Is there a fuse for the side light circuit?? Or is something really buggered??

Cheers everyone

Ps. I haven’t yet taken a multimeter to the bulb connectors to make sure that it isn’t just 2 blown bulbs as it is bloody cold and windy and forecast to snow shortly, I will try that in the morning, but it just seems too much of a coincidence that both bulbs would have gone at the same time to me.

Ok...

First off... welcome to the club ;)

This requires 2 steps to fix.

1. Move to Australia, that will allow you to check the fuses in a better climate :P

2. Check the fuses, both under the driver's side dash, and in the engine bay. It sounds like something shorted out when the light socket burnt.

Maybe 2 or 14 in the engine bay.

cheers for the reply and warm welcome Supplanter :) ... I've just been out and breaved the cold lol (defiantly thinking about moving to Australia in about 3 years!!!) ... All fuses seem fine, however I'm not sure if I'm just an idiot.

I took my car into my uncle’s garage yesterday to have my tappets adjusted and the lights looked at. When it came back the tappets sound fantastic but they hadn't fixed my lights which is my reason for posting. I spoke to my uncle today and he says that he did have a look at the lights but doesn't think the side lights are even in the main cluster of lights and that the only form of side lights that come on is those in the fogs?! Anyone know if he's right? Basically I have 2 bulbs in the main cluster of lights, 1 for the main beam when I turn my lights to the second position, and my high beams that come on when I pull the leaver towards the driver and both work. Then I have the fog lights that come on fully when I press the fog light switch, and dimmer lights that comes on when I turn the lights to just the first setting.

It's a 96 GPX, I did have a GR before this (that I accidentally parked under a ford focus, RIP) and I'm positive that on the GR the side lights came on some how in the main cluster of lights next to my main beam? :D thanks everyone

 Fair enough, what is it then?

Prime, mate welcome to the club, at first I thought you may be have been talking about the parkers (the lights next to the fogs when you turn the lights on to the first position, but now I'm really confused. Any chance of posting up a pic to show us where you are talking about. Maybe it was something that was already modified on your GR before you bought it?
