Constant attacks

Post by I8A4RE »

Ok got a virus a little while ago (and no it wasnt from watching porn) well it could of been jk, and it was bad, none of the spyware removers etc would get rid of it (where they had done in the past). Anyway i completly re-formatted my computer and then purchased norton anti-virus software.

Problem every 5-10 mins or so i get a msg from norton saying recent attack was blocked successfully, Yah. But its happening so regulary. It gives me the IP address of the computer attacking me.

Now heres my question, can i use that information to..... hmmm lets say try and attack them???? its really starting to piss me off and i like to get even not mad, any help from thee computer gods would be much appreciated\

Thanks

i 2nd that

norton likes to let you know every little thing it does, quite annoying in that sense anyway, so just turn the bloody thing off. and it's not worth you time and effort to try getting them back.

Hit him with spam attacks or denail of service attacks. Punch his hosting bill through the roof

Just keep in mind that the hack may have not originated from that IP - it may be using that IP as a mask over his real IP. I'd start by sending an email to the abuse complaints address there.

You might not be interested in preferences, which is fair enough but from what I've seen/heard Nortons pretty much at the bottom of the anti-Virus performance list. Hell many free ones perform better if I recall correctly.

I could be mistaken but I've never been impressed with nortons ability... it consumes more computer resources and fails more often but also gives you way too many notifications.

Prevention is better then cure as they say. You wouldn't use a condom with holes would ya? Ditch norton imho ;)

I use a mac and a firewall personally

What virus/trojan/issue did you get btw?

Build a better Virus scanner, and they'll breed a stupider user. AVG gets the thumbs up from me. Few friends and family members use that and have yet to get themselves into trouble. Not for lack of trying  Some peoples browser history should never be opened.

Tea Timer (an optiona extra of Spybot) is pretty cool for locking down the registry too... altho probably not for people who just click "ok" or "no" all the time.

Well considering norton paid me to install it, im happy. i have always used norton and never had any problems until my subscription expired and i decided to use the "pull out method" (no protection hehe). lets just say it didnt last long. Also the ppl i have been talking to all say norton is one of the best but i dont care whos the best and worse if it protects me then i am happy. you guys probably know way more than me anyway But that is what leads me to wanting to get revenge (if i can) im sick of ppl doing this sh*t, i feel so dirty  .

Attack msg was
Trojan. Virantix.B

Then after that it was just an intrusion attempt

I'm using NOD32 at the moment and it's pretty good. Kapersky is also another good one.

I know this is gonna be harsh, but if you managed to get a trojan on your PC the only one you should be seeking revenge against is yourself ;)

It seems strange to me that the attacks are still happening after you've formatted your computer & reinstalled your OS.. My first thought would be that one of the programs you reinstalled might have a Trojan hidden inside it.. Are you using an Original Windows CD & legitimate copies of all the software you're reloading?
Second thought is that the 'attacks' are completely unrelated to each other.. I say 'attacks' because it doesn't seem like anything too serious has happened..

You got a virus, formatted & reinstalled your computer - It happens .. I format my Windows install every few months anyway even though there are no viruses

When you formatted did you flash the BIOS / do a complete wipe of the harddrive / partition tables etc? (When dealing with viruses, sometimes a simple format isn't enough & they can hang around ..)

I'm not sure what sort of revenge you're after though..

Sounds like you want to hack into their computer & do some sort of damage?

This would be a bit tricky..

Firstly, I'm not sure what sort of 'attack' messages you're getting from Nortons.. Are they incoming or Outgoing? If they're outgoing messages about Trojans then you'll need to reformat your computer again.. it could just be someone running port scans on your computer .. or if you've had a trojan on your PC before they might still have your IP address & are trying to get in again, I would suggest checking your modem/router & making sure that its secure .. put a password on it, activate its firewall if it has one.. change the networking settings etc .. Honestly though , it doesn't sound like its anything to worry about

Even if the WHOIS check on the IP Address is accurate, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is the person that is attacking you.. it could just be another computer with a trojan being controlled remotely by someone else.. or as Ben said, someone forging their IP Address..

You could contact your ISP, or the ISP where the attacks are supposedly originating..
The ISP's are unlikely to do anything about it & also unlikely to refer it on to the police..
Considering that you haven't mentioned anything about having you bank account hacked / having money stolen / data deleted or anything like that, there isn't much that the police would do about it either .. if they launched into action every time someone downloaded a trojan or visited some porn sites & got some nasty spyware then they wouldn't get anything else done..

If it is the person trying to hack your PC, it doesn't seem like they're getting through your firewall.. or that they've done any damage besides a few pop up messages.. hardly worth getting in trouble over if you're caught doing something nasty..
Also if this is your hacker, theres not much you could do to get revenge.. hack them back & if its not just a stupid 14 year old script kiddy, they'll get your IP address & do some damage.. if they're smart, you'll never even know they're there until your bank account is drained & you have charges to all your credit cards & depending on how far they want to take it.. they'll have your address .. so say goodbye to your FTO..
format their computer? They'd just restore their data & reinstall Windows from backup..

As I said, its most likely a 14 y.o. script kiddy sitting at home on his mums computer thinking he's an uber hacks0r cause he can run a few port scans & send trojans to people .. but meh, even tracking down a script kiddy running port scans is still going to be a bit trickier than running a whois & clicking a magic button..

I guess my point is, the best way to deal with it is as everyone else has suggested, protect yourself & get on with your life.

Ditch the Norton Antivirus & Firewall software, get AVG for your antivirus & stop looking at all that dirty german scat porn. (Personally, if I had installed Nortons I would reformat my computer, it imbeds itself into every nook & cranny on your computer, in the registry etc.. & gets really messy & annoying trying to remove all traces of it - worse than a virus IMO)
if you're after a paid antivirus, Kaspersky is good as well (Go for a free trial, it can be installed alongside AVG with no dramas, but I doubt Norton rarely plays nice with other antivirus software)

.. While software firewalls are a nice little novelty, nothing beats a properly configured hardware firewall.. get yourself a decent Firewall router or a dedicated Linux based firewall computer sitting between the Internet & your network (M0n0wall, IPCop, Smoothwall are all good examples) Do a bit of reading on how to configure it, or get a security consultant out.. If you want to run an OS based firewall for peace of mind, just make sure that it isn't a Norton product.. there are a lot of good programs out there if you run a search & check out some reviews

Anyways, I didn't mean to make such a long winded post.. the reality of it 'tis just that you're not going to find any real hackers who will teach you how to hack, if you want to learn, grab some books, read some articles on the net, and be prepared to spend a long time learning..

Lol & the look on peoples faces while you were doing it! priceless... Will people ever learn that they should unplug / cover their webcam when they're not using it?
hehe, there is still fun to be had ;) If anything, people these days are even stupider :P
