FTO half cut
Hi Guys,
The other day I was talking to someone about importing a half cut from Singapore.
The person claims that he can get a full car for the price of a half cut.
The only problem is that he wants me to put down an offer for it.
Could someone please give me an idea of what a 98 GPX TIP half cut would be worth?

half cut means everything from the car's firewall forward... that means everything inside the engine bay (incl gearbox, panels, lights, firewall etc)
so imagine you're looking at the car sideways, then chop the front where the windscreen starts (firewall) and there's your half-cut.
maybe not proportionally in size but hey i didn't come up with that term myself, so I don't have all the answers hehehe...

I have a vague memory of an early 1998 RED GPX, no sunroof, 5speed tip.

The car is a Black 98 5 speed tip GPX.
They have the whole car at the moment.
They will sell it for the price of the half cut.
I'm currently waiting for them to give me a price for it.
The funny thing is there is no damage to this car. They even sent me a picture.
What are the rules with importing whole cars for wrecking?
Due they have to be cut in half in order to avoid luxury car taxes or can i just have the doors and panels pulled off?

As far as I know of importing a car for wrecking, you have to have the car fully dismantled before bringing it over here.
Because when you import a car for wrecking, you import it with considerably less price, which means everyone would do it this way and save heaps of money....so they won't let you imports a car as a whole, meaning just having few panels removed and so forth isn't dismantled. It has to be fully dismantled.
Well that's how it used to be, so you might want to check out the Australian rule before going ahead with this because it'll be cheap to buy this car but may cost you a whole lot more when you have to put them all back together again!

Hear is the deal that I have at the moment that I’m trying to sus out to see if it’s worth the money or not.
My contact in Singapore currently has 2 FTO HALF CUTS. Both for $4600AU each.
One 5 speed tip and one 5 speed manual.
What you get is.
You will get the complete engine( 2 Litre Mivec), and power train. This means everything under the hood comes complete, alternator, a/c compressor, power steering unit, ecu & harness, radiator, etc... I'm sure you know what I'm saying. It also will include front suspension and front brakes. Dashboard is provided together, Speedo Cluster meter will come together, but the condition of the dashboard as I was told may not be in satisfactory condition due to scratches. These parts listed are for certain to be included in both units.
He is not sure wether the front headlight and bumper are included but he is finding out.
Do you think it would be worth it?
Would anybody else be interested in getting the other half cut?

$4600 for an FTO front cut sounds alright (considering that it comes with the manual gearbox too), by the time you bring it into the country after paying the relevant fees & charges you're looking at close to around $6K-$6.5K, if not more....
you could even strip some unwanted parts off from the front cut and on-sell it...

And then sell the rest piece by piece.
I just thought since it is so hard to get those little bits and pieces I thought that it would be handy for someone in the club to have all those bits and pieces on hand.
I know there are lots of engines and gearboxes over hear , but there are not any place’s that have all the dials and interior panels
And I find these parts to be the most expensive as they are extremely hard to find.
For example the radio surround panel in an FTO is $250 from Mitsubishi (Even though it’s just a pieces of F*C#ing plastic); if someone was to have one for $50 dollars then I’m sure people would jump at the idea.
Oh and $4600 is just the starting price without any real bargaining just yet.
I’m sure he will be able to do better than that.

You might be doing a favour for someone else by having some of these bits and pieces, but I don't know that you'll be doing any favours for yourself.
You'll have to sell a lot of bits to recover your cash, and I don't know that much of the "bits and pieces" will be in sellable condition. Virtually all half-cuts are cars that were written off, which normally means they have been in a severe crash. In most severe crashes the dash is damaged due to occupants hitting it or the chassis twisting and squeezing it out. Also, the wreckers take a lot of the sellable bits, just leaving behind the main components.
Don't hinge your bets on there being sellable parts, only work on what you know for absolute certainty about what is left in it and what condition it is in, otherwise you could get burnt.
