MIVEC - Tappets adjustable or not ?
After reading the "Servicing" section on this forum and hearing a bit of noise from what i thought was the tappets, i ventured down to the local mechanic to show him and advise i would like the tappets adjusted (i even printed the page out from this site showing the measurements of what they should be).
To my surprise he turns around and says they are not adjustable and i would have to get the head done if i want to get the tappets done.
What's the story here, is he correct or is this website correct as i'm confused now !!!
Oh, after putting some Mobil 1 in, the noise has gone away, guess she just needed a little TLC.

yeah they are differently adjustable, and I'm thinking of getting mine done while my head is off and half my engine is apart.

When I first got to Adelaide with my car, I went to the local Mitsu dealer and asked if they could be adjusted... Guess he didnt want to have to do them either, cos he said no. Needless to say, Ive never had my car serviced there.

It's not that urgent unless they are very noisy. SOme people just use a thicker oil to quiten them down a bit (this is what would have happened when you put the Mobil 1 in it I think).
It's only expensive because of the labour involved. to get to the rear bank they have to take the inlet manifold off. Same as you have to to get to the rear spark plugs. THus if you want it done by a mechanic may as well get all this done at once (ie 100k service). Maybe anyway.
ON the perfomance front I'm not sure, but it doesn't sound good does it? I think if they get very bad you can get to a point that they become unadjustable and then you have to replace them. I've heard this is VERY expense.
