What oil are you using now? It might already be thick enough, you might just have to get your tappets adjusted.

the GPX engine had adjustable tappets, in an older engine (your 94 for example) theyve probably rarely been tightened.

Get them adjusted. Thicker oil just masks the problem.

now do i have the confidence to do it my self :? because im not very mechanically knowledgeable with cars well not with doing stuff like this.

i was happy that i took my inlet manifold off and done that my self but it still didnt work properly when i put it back on but that wasnt my fault the idle control valve internals had corroded away

I don't know much about doing it... was going to do them myself but I'd probably stuff something up :P

Here is a good guide for adjusting the tappets;
http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=33120

There was another one somewhere with lots of pictures, and there's a few others around the place. If you search the www.ftooc.org forums you should come up with a few more.

You will probably be shocked at how much they charge, but they can at least give you an accurate time for what it will take and cost. If you are going to another garage take along a copy of the "how to " guide and get them to give you a quote based on it. At least then they will know what they are doing. I did mine myself and the longest parts were -

1. Making up the tool to adjust the tappets. I got a long reach 10mm socket and used a stone wheel in a drill to grind off one edge of it.

2. being a paranoid perfectionist I took ages getting the tappets to the gap I wanted. Then I redid them because I'm paranoid. I couldn't shift one of the nuts but it has made a huge difference anyway.
