Adelia Gear kit

Post by Atomrally »

I fitted an Adelia gearkit to my car last week, and what an enormous difference it makes.
Its a little rocket on the boil all the time now.
Interestingly the kit only come with 1st thru 4th gears, so had to make 5th locally.
1st 3.142
2nd 2.316
3rd 1.692
4th 1.258
5th 1.03 (This is the same ratio of 4th in a std FTO box)

They're not ultra close ratios, just close enough.
When you shift from 1st to 2nd at redline, revs drop to about 6,400rpm in 2nd and it keeps pulling hard.
I've done this a thousand times before and no-one's been hurt........much!

I also have a 5.0 Final drive so its doing 4,100-ish rpm at 100kph.
Top speed is just under 200kph, perfect for rallying, absolute crap on the motorway!

My 5th gear is the same ratio as your std 4th gear, so just pop yours into 4th and take note (Then factor in 5.0FD)

It doesn't help economy :D

It's a rallycar, if it's travelling long distance it's on a trailer!! :wink:
Economy isn't part of the equation, and it finds other ways to kill my wallet too!

Unfortunately I have to take the camera mount out of the car for rallies cause it gets in the way of putting the helmets in the back for touring.
Last weekend we entered Canterbury Rally here in Christchurch and broke an axle 15km into stage one...bummer
Rejoined later with a spare but somehow lost my MOJO as we didn't count for the results after that.
There are some sprints next month, I'll record those for ya :D

great pics,
I have always been interested in rallies,

so, is the g/box from FTO as well?
Do you have sponsors?
Do you have a crew that helps behind the scene?

Yes it has an FTO motor and gearbox, although its had the gearkit, final drive and a Cusco LSD added.

Sponsors......hmmmm.......I wish, some small ones that help with product or service only

Crew, yes indeed, I have a group of awesome guys who aren't frightened of getting stuck into it regardless of weather or cold.

That's awesome
Are you gonna take it to the drag strip?
I'd be interested what it does... I guess it might pull a 12 on good tyres hey?
In fact probably would do easy 12s

The drag strip isn't terribly exciting so I have no idea.
Hey its only a 2 litre engine so I suspect high 13's.

What type of engine management?? I think you might be surprised.. if it's running a haltech or equivalent, with good rubber and stripped weght I think you could definitely crack twelves with those ratios. Cmon- take it to the strip!!!!! You know you wanna :lol:

It got a Link G2 and makes a bit over 130kW at the wheels on race gas.

I just can't quite afford to buy a set of sticky tyres right now, and the rollcage and rally stuff tends to make it a bit heavy.
Plus I suck at drag race starts, I need a 10 or 15km stage to get warmed up :)

Ok Ok I will one day but don't expect too much.

Whats the viability of getting a longer 5th gear in my fto??

If I want speed, im in 4th at higher speeds, 5th is only for cruising on the highway... Would love it if it went from 3,700rpm or whatever to like 2,600... Would save a heap on fuel...
More than a few hundred = meh.

Bigger diameter tyres are the quickest way to gear your car up.

It's not that hard to get a 5th gear made, you've just got to hand your gearbox over to the appropriate expert and the cash of course, between $600 and $800 at a guess.

Do you have any contacts for Adelia as Im looking into dog boxes at the moment.

Modena Engineering Australia do 5 speed F5M42 kit with various ratios
http://www.modenaengineering.com.au
1st gear 15/36
2nd 18/33
3rd 20/29
4th 22/27
5th 22/23 opp /2 24/27
CWP 14/67 OR 10/51 OR 16/69

and they can do custom ratios if you like. Ive also got a box off with a company in the UK who is looking at doing me a custom built drag dog box.

Sam try and find a Galant V6-24V manual gearbox, its an F5M42 and will bolt straight on. It has a longer final drive so drops the revs across the range.

1st = 3.583
2nd = 1.947
3rd = 1.379
4th = 1.030
5th = 0.767
Final = 3.722

Thats what I run at the moment.

For custom stuff I think the language barrier makes Japan hard going.

We've got plenty of engineering companies here in NZ making dog gear kits but I'm sure there are plenty in the UK too. That's where we used to get stuff for Group N rallyars from - Gemini I think/ It was a few years ago.

I guess you could do land speed record attempts with your 3.7 final drive and a 0.76 5th!

Over 200mph, and with 500bhp, aiming for 700bhp I can almost do it :D
