From memory thermite burns really hot during the reaction phase and can burn through pretty much anything. The easiest way to make it is using rust particles and aluminium filings. It's just not easy to get a few sticks of magnesium to start the reaction let alone get a flame hot enough to light the magnesium.
Oh well.....
