Don't want to be ripped off !

Hi,
Now I know a few of you have probably had some of these things done in the past so I want an estimate on price to get these things fixed so I dont get ripped off.....

things to be repaired on my car at the moment:

1. Alternator belt

2. Air con Belt

3. Air Con idle Pulley

4. Rocket Cover gasket

5. Reverse Light Switch

6. Clutch Kit or New Clutch ?

7. Alternator (not 100% sure if this needs to be fixed or replaced )

So appreciate the imput you can give me as Im not really familiar with the engine side of my car as I have never really had to spend money on the engine before now .....

Just keep in mind, just like everything else, lowest price doesn't mean the best workmanship, service and quality.

But that doesn't mean you have to pay through the roof for things either. I guess you just have to find someone that have good knowledge of FTO and change a resonable price.

I can't help you on prices, as I usually get my ex-FTO services and parts at either trade prices or free.

I reckon the first 5 of those could be done by one of the lads down there. All relatively easy jobs. In those 5 items there would be maybe ~$200 bucks worth of parts needed...

New clutch kit would set you back around $300, but the labour can get pricey on that. Think around the $700 to have it done right.

Best & most cost effective way to fix the alternator is to have it reconditioned. Maybe a $400 job including labour. However, if you combined both the alternator & clutch job with the one mechanic you could probably save on labour, as when the gearbox is out to do the clutch, its then really easy to get at the alternator

Belts are cheap. I can do them for u and u can buy them at Repco or OEMs at Mitsi. Go to repco and ask fro FTO they have this on it system. Wont cost more than $100 for all belts. Drive to my house i will install them and 30min later...they will be fine.

The Air con idel pully might be expensive. I would suggest by one at CAMSKILL or order one through Mitsi. Here is the link to CAMskill:

Rocket Rover Gasket can be bought form Mitsi not expensive I would think. I havnt done it on the FTO...seems like we might do a DIY day...cant be that hard really. I suspct mine is seeping a bit so i wanted to do mine anyway.

Clutch Kit...could get anything. $700 seems to be the going price.

WHat makes them think u need the alternator fixed? But yeah get it reco'd. Not sure where might need to suss that out.

Silverfish and I were planning a day at my house to do his new EL dials and he was ognna help with my seats. Maybe we can make a day of it and:

DO all the things u want ...except the clutch and alternator (at thsis stage anyway unless we get one I'm sure we can install.)

Change you oil + filter and plugs also. Might as well if we are going to do the Rocket gasket. Maybe do a Coolant flush - notice overheating?

Let me know if you want to do it. I'm sure Gav would be in for it also.

I'm keen to get you using thei German Castrol oil. Good stuff aparently. We can get some cheep form my mate.

Ok Im down for that Im off completely and everyday till Wednesday the 31st it would be great to get them done before then if possible ..as it's hard for me to get out of work on weekends so if maybe this sunday I could do it if you guys are available ?

I suggest you wait until u have got all the parts...we can do it quite easily after work (for me) one night. I think the belts/oil/sparks are easy.

The pully I'm not sure about...we can leave that until we have a look at the belts.

Once the alternator is out take it to an Auto Electrician and it should cost between $200~$300 to get it reconditioned.

ok guys .... my car really is lacking some TLC and need to get some of these things done .... when can we organise this day ?
saturday or monday is going to be the only day I can do this unfortunately I know Im been a pain ... if it's too much hassle will have to drop it in to a mechanic ... scared of breakdowns and other dramas unfolding ..

Come sunday if u like. We can work on yours. We can do most of the things.

I will check it out and see how bad everything is.

We cna easily do:
belts
oil
plugs

Alternator needs to be re-co'd an out of the car
Rocker cover gasket...not too hard..just need one.

Can u organise the bits?

Well .... after spending half the day on the phone a friend has come to the rescue and her husbands workshop buddies at CND Motorworks are going to do my alternator repairs on Monday as they are getting me another one ... so no car for a few days ... (relying on mums old ford

shame her car is still reliable after so many years ... think it's never been over 90 k's ) lol ........
So will probably hold off on the other things for a few weeks to build up the bank balance again .... if anything changes will let you know ...

I just got a p/s air con belt for $35 from Repco just over a week ago. A few months back my mech who serviced my EF Ghia for many years had my alternator in the FTO rebuilt and fitted for $375. He charged $24 for a new Alt belt fitted too. Everything works great now.

Hope this helps with pricing anyhow.

well love to say I have had a great day .... but after driving like a maniac trying to get to CND Motorworks before I lost all charge of my battery ...... they ring and tell me the good news .... $2K for works completed .... new heavy duty clutch $1085... Alternator $370..... Drive shaft boots replaced and belts any other problems they found along the way ...... Nice way to spend my day off ...... but good news is that pretty much everything will be fixed and finished !

well still have no car ....... alternator they got to replace mine doesnt work .... dad had a look at my alternator and couldnt see anything wrong with it so sending it to auto electrician in the morning .....

need some help guys .... if it's not the alternator what else could possibly be wrong with my car .... starting to feel very upset now
