Mivec not hitting Redline...

Post by mr-charisma »

Hey all,

My 95' GPX has a little bit of a hard time getting past the 6k revs mark ... I've read through the forums and have found a heap of different threads and posts claiming different things to be the cause. I've tried letting it warm up for a good half hour before planting my foot, bought an AFC, but am yet to fit it, have read that it could be the "Lambda sensor", also read the following which says that it is a faulty "knock/Detonation Sensor"

Basically, the following summarises my problem;

Here I am Very Happy
Yeah I had that problem in my old 96 GPX tiptronic. One day it just wouldn't hit mivec range. Even on kickdown it would bounce off the 5500/6000 range and not kickdown unless you pressed lightly enough so as not to cause a drop of too many gears (and then a consequent jump in revs).

It spent a couple of weeks off the road with the problem eventually being diagnosed as a faulty knock/detonation sensor. Only a cheap part but due to its position smack bang in the middle of the engine block - the labour cost was huge! From memory it cost approx $700...car was right as rain once it was fixed though.
Wondering if I could get confirmation on this if anyone else has had this problem, and was able to have it fixed.

Also, if anyone knows somewhere in Brisbane or Gold Coast that I will be able to get it fixed, and done properly, I kind've want to get it Dyno tuned before and after just for my own peace of mind that it is definately fixed.

Oh, and is there anything that can be done to my engine that will make it run more smoothly? it has been running a bit rough lately..

do an ECU error code check. There's a description on how to do it on FTOWA. Take heed of any error codes that are shown.

yeah, i've checked out the error codes page on the ftowa site... not clear on how to 'ground' the pin like it mentions, I will have to have a look at it on the weekend, but don't really want to mess with things if i'm not 100% sure about how to do it. Might even need to resort to going to Mitsu & have them do the diagnostic testing if all else fails..

steering wheel under cover panel has 4 screws in it, you need to take these out to access the black socket for ECU code reading anyways.
Use the left below screw place on the chassis for grounding

Am I right in assuming that by "grounding" you just run a bit of wire from that pin, to a section of metal on the car? Like you do with a computer (touch the the metal part of the computer case to discharge static?)

I'm alright with the rest of it, its just that part that i'm confused aboot. :?
