Symptoms:
First, the speedo drops to zero, then the transmission goes into limp mode (stays in 3rd gear, N light flashes twice a second). It has happened 3 times now, if I turn off the car and wait a few minutes it behaves itself as though nothing has happened. 2 out of 3 times it has happened when I was driving sedately (revs belw 3500).
How do I check the error codes for the auto ECU?

Check the error codes in the same way as you check the engine ones, just read them off the "n" light rather then the engine light. However 2Hz flashing means your box is overheating, so it is either overheating or your temp sensor has gone AWOL.
Either way it needs checked out as the tip fluid will degenerate PDQ when it overheats and your box will follow it.
Check your cooler isn't blocked, your fluid and or filter may need changed or your temp sensor, not sure where that is though, may be fubared.

Thanks for all the help. I had a poke around under the steering wheel yesterday. It appears that the tacho signal wires for my head up display had broken out of the plug and were touching each other. I have taped the ends as a temporary measure and my car has been behaving since, so fingers crossed that was the problem
And just to show that I was having a normal Supp day, I have stuffed up my automatic mirror folding circuit in the process... now my mirrors don't open when I unlock the car
