FTO Drifting
Managed to achieve the impossible by accident today.... Drifting in an FTO. Impossible you say - well I beg to differ.
Hasnt rained for a while in Canberra. Bucketed down for about 20 minutes. I came out about an hour later and by this time the road was dry. There is a round about about 100m from where I was parked. Jumped in the car and went to turn right at the round about. Hit the round about agressively but not unduly fast. Didnt take into account that although the road was dry, my tyres werent. I have better tyres on the front than on the back and in this instance the back let go but the front stuck. Drifted beautifully around the round about (even stayed in my lane). Got a bit of a shock (I will learn from this) and remember thinking "but a front wheel drive car shouldnt be able to do this"
Everyone out there be careful today, a lot of oil and muck on the roads due to the lack of rain - it is slippery. If my FTO let go, the family wagon with non directional tyres is going to be lots of fun.

Of course you can drift in a FWD car. The Urban Dictionary says so, so it must be true.
drifting
To cause a vehicle to slide or ‘drift’ laterally. It is caused by making a turn a speeds high enough to cause the tires (both front and rear, but the rear tires go first and the front don’t always go) to loose traction, allowing the car to slide laterally. It is possible in front, rear, and all wheel drive. Pulling the hand/emergency/parking break (three names for the same thing) at the apex of a turn will allow one to drift at lower speeds than if the rear wheels were allowed to spin freely. Also, drastically speeding up the rear wheels by revving the engine (therefore causing the rear wheels to spin faster than the car is moving forward) will allow one to drift more easily, this is only possible in rear wheel drive.

Hey same thing happened to me today as well.. driving to work around about 11:30 or so this morning.. I didnt drift around a round about like you did.. but i was taking a right turn, knowin that the road was wet/ slippery and with the poor condition of my tyres i actually took it nice n easy, but the car still went sideways.. not only did it happen on that turn but as i was going down hills i could barely keep the car straight, If i sit about 60 or so it was fine but as it crept up to about 80 (which was the speed limit).. felt it sliding about.. The front tyres are brand new but the rears are almost non road worthy, so guess that may have been the case.. I think we've just descovered a way to drift the fto's! good front tyres / poor rears & alittle bitta rain.. hehehe

No I think ill just leave this experience as a one off...... The thought of hurting my FTO is not a pleasant one.
