Yep that sounds about right. I had my timing belt changed at Sports Car International about a year and a half ago and they charged me $300 for the timing belt.

I recommend Sports Car International as well. The mechanic Niall has extensive experience on the FTO. I took my car there today to get this engine rattle noise looked at (possibly tappets) and he was working on another FTO and one more to come. I spoke to him at length about my problem and he definitely knows his stuff. They may be slightly more expensive than other places but I still recommend them.

Cheers

Well if you want to save a few dollars, as I recently did(just got my timing belt replaced yesterday actually...and incredibly happy with the price of the labour etc)
Buy it direct from Mitsubishi in NZ, comparing that price of about $300-350 for just the timing belt locally, you can get the timing belt + the hydraulic tensioner(some people reccomment replacin it at the same time) for $439NZ shipped, which equates to about $380Aus if my memory serves me right(as opposed to about $300-350 for belt and another $200 or so for the tensioner from Mitsu in Sydney)

Took about 1-2 days to organise it and another 2-3 to land on my door step.

The other option is one I was going to do which was the guys at Perfect Run said they could import the belt from japan for about $220 but it was a few weeks wait(same price as NZ pretty much so i didnt bother with the waiting)

If you want to contact Mitsu in NZ, email me and ill pass you on their details(thanks to Dannyboy who also suggested I try them and saved me a couple of bucks in the process)

Just got a quote the other day from Kempy's Bitza Mitzy in NZ
Total= NZ$384 including shipping to Australia - which is about AUS$350 - for the belt and Tensioner..

Bloody bargain! :P

Basically same price as locally but you also score the tensioner!

well there is nothing majorly wrong with high quality after market parts, but seeing as mitsu NZ sells the genuine one for pretty much the same price as an aftermarket one from kempys i went genuine

as for the tensioner, it depends who you asked, but i was of the opinion better safe than sorry, because if the tensioner goes, its just as bad as the belt goin i would guess

Just fyi buying both the tensioner and the belt from mitsu NZ worked out $49 NZ different(because mitsu nz charged me the gst, whereas kempy's didnt quote it), which is about $30AUS? hardly anything for the peace of mind of genuine in my opinion

Just so anyone knows, a timing belt from Mitsubishi NZ, plus Hydraulic Tensioner(which is usually advised to be replaced at the same time, and isnt cheap being almost as much as the belt, eg genuine belt is $200NZ, genuine tensioner is $165NZ) is exactly $438.75NZ for GENUINE PARTS...which equates to about $370ish AUS...

If anyone is after them contact :
Derek Henton dhenton@mitsubishi-motors.co.nz
Used Parts Specialist, Mitsubishi NZ
(04) 237 2408(remember to use internation dialing codes etc)
Part numbers are(for a GPX)
Cambelt - MD211195
Tensioner - MD308593

So if you want to use after market, go with Cohn's idea(see other thread)...if you want to use genuine then go with Mitsubishi NZ
