Goes harder is a term that commodore owners say. I bet you call rims “mags” too 
Not sure what a twin cam kicking in is but the intake runners switching does make a sound change if you run a pod filter.
How does it idle?
If your MIVEC solenoids are not connected though then there's no way MIVEC is operating properly
