Limp Mode/ Flashing `N`

Hello all
I have just purchased an FTO GPX 95 mod
I keep getting a problem with the neutral light flashing
and the car staying in 3rd gear.
I took the car to a transmission guy who told me the car was going into limp mode because of a fault. he directed me to a auto electrician who
has had the car for four days now still trying to identify the fault.
Thought to be a solinoid, sensor, tps throttle presure something, or computer problem.
I have searched this forum and found two other people who have had
a neutral light flashing problem but have no answers to fix it.
It's also a problem in england.
appears it may be the speed sensor
Hopefully now someone may have found the answer to this problem.

OK, just had a look at the workshop manual and this is what it says to diagnos if the N range lamp flashes:
1. Input shaft speed sensor
2. Output shaft speed sensor
3. Each solenoid valve
4. Out of phase at each shift point
5. A/T control relay system
5. A/T transmission fluid temperature too high
I suggest you download the workshop manuals because they have an entire section on troubleshooting the automatic transmission. Last time I checked, you can download them here:

i recommend going to an import specialist who has an addaptor for the car CPU so that it will give you a debug code once you have that we can help you with what is wrong it is most likely a faulty sensor.

The car is still at the autoelectricians
Has ia able to get the codes but gets a number of error codes
and had to eliminate each one, one at a time.
The speed sensor was not one of the error codes
but i read at an english site that is is a good chance
of being my problem. Iv'e also heard from two people
who had the same problem theirs being bad or corroded
plug or electrical conection.
There are quite a pew people here and in England with this fault.
Need more people who have had and resolved this problem to
get back and post how they fixed it.

normally its just a broken wire or a sensor that has decided it has had enough... get the error codes and we can tell you what they mean

Have resolved my problem
Thanks to all the guys that emailed and helped me out
Turned out you were right when directing me to the speed
sensor, mine turned out to be the 4 pin apparently there are two
types 3 & 4 pin, The autoelectrician and transmission guy also
learned a lesson at my expence.
Anyway thanks again.

ok, i'm asking this on behalf of Hao (HNM738).
basically he's getting the same problem with a 'limp' except from the diagnostic test, he's getting an error code 22 which is pointing to the crank angle sensor...
as i have no experience with tiptronic problems, can somebody please explain to our friend what could be the cause?
Problem fixes itself if the car is turned off and on.

Actually GPX I have the exact same error code 22. I was asking around and was told that 22 was the input speed sensor.
I took my air filter box out and looked at the at box but couldnt identify what that one was. I was looking for loose wiring but nothing obviese. Can anyone point me to the Input speed sensor? Picture maybie? Anyone replaced this before? How much from where?

Hi All,
Am just working on this problem now. Limp mode seems to occur every 500kms or so for me. Have read the workshop manual and code 22 is input shaft sensor fault. According to the workshop manual limp mode is a failsafe measure
I read a couple of previous posts and got in touch with Coffeboy who gave me great information. Even went to the trouble of giving me a call to let me know more about it - great service from a great bloke! He gave me the number of a mitsubishi dealer to call. Needed to quote them the car's VIN number and they then advised me which part I need. Cost for the part is $200+ - am going to order tomorrow from local dealer so not sure how long it would take to install.
One question I have though is how can I run a diagnostic check to confirm the error code - I don't have any equipment to do this? The reason I ask because the same problem can be caused by either error code 22 or 23.
Code 22 is an Input speed sensor fault and code 23 is an output speed sensor fault.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

other than that take it down to your local mitsu dealer they have a device called a MUT-2 (correct me if im wrong here people) that they plug in and extract the error code from the ecu

Thanks Slither, have managed to get the transmission guy to run the diagnostics for me. He also had a look at the two speed sensors (input & output). He was familiar with the problem as he's dealt with FTO's before. Before replacing the sensors he said that 9 times out of 10 the problem is fixed by simply removing the sensors and twisting them. This did something to the pins and so far it seems to have worked - I will keep the forum updated if the problem re-occurs.
If the problems starts again then I will have to replace the faulty sensor.
To access the sensors was pretty easy. All he had to do was remove the battery and the battery plate and there they were. All up it took about 20 mins to do.

Thanks for posting your repair, Im going to give it a go on mine on the weekend. Ill take them out and give them a "twist". Any more details on what that actually means??

Hi Foe,
When I watched him do it he had pliers and a screwdriver and simply tweaked the pins inside each sensor a little bit. From memory one of the sensors was a 3 pin and the other was a 4 pin.

Freom what Ive read its under the airbox.. I found this in the workshop manual and went to try and find it
I take it that that round thing is the A/T filter. Found three plugs on top of the A/T box but not sure if it was any of them. Can anyone post pic of what it is so I can have a go at checking it?

just to let you all noe
i bought the input speed shaft sensor
put it in and everythings working fine changes gear really smooth
i notice that my old sensor when i took it out it was really dirty
but everythinsg fix now took me 15 mins
cost 117$ for the sensor
stephen told me he could get those now or soon

You cant really see it even if you take a picture... It is sort of underneath and to the left of the airbox (standing at the front of the car)... next to the bracket that holds the cable for the gear select lever...
All you can see is a plug with a wire going into it with a bolt holding it down.... the body of the sensor sits in the transmission.
