engine noise

hi, i've mentioned before that im obsessed with little annoying noises in cars, especially one that i dont know what it is, and my fto seems to be developing one.

when i bought the car a few months ago i didn't notice a noise, but over time it seems to be developing kind of a rattle or tick in the engine. i've had the drivebelts replaced which helped (removed one noise as the drive belt was shot), and did a complete flush, oil change and oil filter change, which also seemed to help a bit.

but im still getting this one noise, seems to be coming from the middle of the engine, usually worse at start up but gets a bit better as it warms up. but it's still there, and it's drive me nuts!

any ideas on what it might be before i fork out for a mechanic? (who probably wont know what he's looking at, as not many seem to know what an fto is.)

Is it a tick-tick-tick noise? Probably tappets...

i'm not totally sure to be honest. that's what i thought at first, which is why i did the whole flush and oil change thing.

since that did help a bit, could that point the way towards it being tappets? if so, what would i need to do about it? (havn't done much with internals before)

hey man

Yeah definitly sounds like tappets (lifters). not sure with out hearing it though.

Is it a GR or a GPX? The engine oil flush wouldn't have done too much to correct the noise if it is the tappets.

You'd be surprised. Old gunky residue from sh*t oil can certainly jar them up.

So does the gunky residue remain even after an oil flush?

it's a gpx, and the flush did help a little bit. i think i'll try that stuff that's supposed to stop ticking, cant remember what it's called, stop-tick ? hehe. if that doesn't work i guess i'll be taking it to a mechanic...

try a thicker oil and see if its get quieter, if it does its definately the tappets

You also got to worry about them having a tool to undo the lock nut, I had to get the oxy to modify a 10mm spanner.

This is the one I made, I use a set of vicegrips to turn it, might not look much but it does the job.

I think the mitsubishi workshop tool is a tube spanner with one side cut out so it can get around the cams.

LOL my equivalent of your tool is similar - just has a head stud welded across the top of the ring spanner.
