Handbrake

My handbrake is really hard to pull on (lots of resistance) and even at full force when i put it on i wouldnt trust it on a steep hill. if i pull it on when moving it just slows the car to a stop making it impossible for handbrakey..not that i would  .

I just recently had my front brakes changed and got the mechanic to look at the handbrake. he told me that it was allready tightend as far as possible.

i know theres something wrong as my last FTO was effortless to put on and as i lifted the handle past a certain point it would snap on really well over 1 notch.

any ideas? or is the mechanic talking BS.

rear pads could be gone...
brake fluid could be low...
or there could be a leak in the brake line...
or it could have kink in it...

Second rear pad check.

Could be streched cable too....

I have the same problem, cable's not stretched or anything so I assume the rear pads are gone... I don't want to check though, because if they are that means i'll have to replace them, and that costs money... you can see the predicament i'm in.

Lol - if you can't see it then it's not there. Motto to live by!!

Hmm, i check my brake fluid this avro but wouldnt the front brakes have problems then to? think it might be a strectched cable or has a kink in it as i had my brakes checked and front changed just last week and rear ones were fine.

Able to throw me estimate $$ for stretched cable before i take back to mechanic?

Thanks for info to, given much clear picture of the prob.

jonowong, hes talking about apples and you are talking about oranges.

two different things.

If the cable is stretched then the hand brake would come up a lot without holding the car. In your case try to have a look underneath if the shielding for your cable hasennt been damaged and is grabbing your cables.
