hi fellow members,
i have attached the new HKS Super power flow- reloaded filter like for a year..just this week.. my idiling is totally stuffed...the car wouldnt start...it struggle to make the 800rmp.... and i noticed a 'hssssssssing" sound from the air filter...its not covered in the box....
i thought it was the stepper motor and got the mechanic to check all the electrical connection etc...
result = he concluded the air filter is intaking too much air into the engine..and he made the appriorate adjustments.... so the car is back and running....but advice to place the stock air filter back in...
so i am was wondering how all the rest of members copy with their intake modification??
thanks...

too much air???
hmmm...u have a stock air pipe? Its unlikely that an HKS filter will give u too much air but in theory its possible and if it happens the ECU might not be about to compensate enough for too much air comming in.
However we all have pods and new pipes...no dramas at all. Unless urs has no filter at all
Not only have I got a massive pod (Unifilter type) and a new air pipe I have a 3" pipe running from the front grill into the pod area - i.e. sh*t loads more air comming in...runs like a dream.

yeah...i am pretty sure u guys mods takes in much more air than my..since its just stock pipe.... and i am have reset my ECU...
never had any dramas until this week... anything else that i might need to reset or adjust???
the guy pretty much went through everything....and run thru some test on the computer to diagonise it...

Sucking too much air? If it is, then that mean your air/fuel ratio isn't correct, so i would say it could be one of the fuel supplier module isn't running properly e:g fuel pump, fuel line blocked....etc.
As i never heard of sucking too much air from an air filter before...and like khunjeng said, your computer isn't compensate or relearning properly, which mean it could be faulty.
Did your mechanic did a normal diagonistic or he did one of those FTO error code diagonistic?
If its your ECU, then you can either get it repair or replace or get a Apexi SAFC to override it.

First of all do you have a GR or GPX? Reason being the GR would have the MAF sensor which if not reading correctly can cause a lot of similar issues.
My conclusion is that your mechanic is unsure and quick to blame the filter...if you had the filter on for a year and its only now doing this it's very unlikely to be your filter. Your ecu is more than capable of reading the difference in air pressure between filters.
It could be possibly... an intake leak at the filter connection or anyway along the piping, thus confusing the MAF, assuming you have a GR. The MAF is very sensitive and even things like improper positioning or movement can effect them.
Could also be your stepper motor is still not functioning properly. He may have checked the electrics but doesnt mean the motor itself is functioning properly. Might just need cleaning.
Your throttle body may need cleaning and be sticky so not opening the usual amount, thus lower idle.
Anything else would usually effect your driveability at higher rpm as well.
Btw the hissing noise is quite common, i get it as well and my car idles fine.
Your mechanic probably just played with the screw above the throttle body till the revs were ok. While this is not so bad, it might just be masking a more serious problem depending on how much adjustment he had to do.

thanks for the reply redlineGX....
got gpx...and i lending towards your opinion on what the mechanic did....
i give that stepper motor a good clean sooon.and reset the ecu..and go from there.....since had a search around and seem majority of idle problems are result of that stepper.....
cleaning the throttle body? thats wd40 job when stepper motor taken out??

Dont use WD40, you can buy throttle body or Carb cleaner. You have to remove the intake pipe right after the throttle body so you can see the butterfly valve. All inside there may need cleaning and you can probably do it with engine on and rev it out a little as you srpay to get it out of the system. Might need a rag since it will probably drip out also.
