my speakers are all stock.. sony xplode head unit. even after playing around with equalizer i get nice clear sound but pretty lame bass.. is this normal? im not expecting anything awesome off factory speakers.. but i would at least expect it to be better than certain family cars ive been in with $50 head units and factory sound.

where should i go first to make my sound a bit better on a fairly low budget? 6x9s in the back or what?

Sony xplode.......

I think this is where your problem starts and ends.

Apart from the Sony bashing, which I love (good work guys) I can almost gaurentee that the problem lies with your stock speakers. The rubber on these things simply will not last 12years. They are most likely well and truly shagged by now.

When I pulled mine out to replace them the rubber had all but disintegrated on one leaving only the cardboard cone, and had badly cracked in the other. This meant that without the bass frequency's on my headunit turned right down they would vibrate and crackle like all sh*t.

In the mean time, just drop the bass on your headunit and they'll sound fine even when cranked. You'll need to replace them soon though, with something decent please (that means no sony, alpine, pioneer, or anything else you can buy at jb hifi). Get some nice splits if you have the money, boston acoustics sound brilliant.

I had stock speakers in mine when i bought it. they are sh*t full stop.

I have a full set of Jaycar 6x9s plus 6.5" splits and it is awsome now...the only thing holding me up is the headunit now - some double din pioneer (see RnBboi's) surround GB for a pic)

Once I replaced the speakers and installed my own crossovers for all...its really nice...esp. since I didn't speant more than $350 for all 6 speakers.

I have reviewed a lot of specs for "big name" speakers and despite them being not keen to publish these the jaycar ones have farly good ratings in terms of sensitivity and freq. responce esp. since they are like half the price.

Yep, i've heard nothing but good things about Jaycar speakers! Their amps are quite well put together to. Anyone buying on a budget should definetly choose these!

yeah I don't have any amps...but I have heard they are good value for money. IMO its better than buying low end "big name" stuff.

When I imported mine, it had Pioneer 6" 3ways at the front and stock rears, I turned the volume up and the rears sh*t them selves, so I just threw in a cheap set of 250w 3way 6x9's for the time being, sounds a lot better.

I had my stock speaker for like 1hr after i bought the FTO & swap them for some sony which i bought for another car, but then i took it out as its just not anywhere near the performance at the price its suggested.

Anyway its running Diamond Audio & JL Audio now, way better then stock or Sony. Sony isn't bad though, i'm just fussy, because I always been an Alpine man.

But like everyone said, Jaycar is the way to go, its the best bang for your buck audio speakers/amp i've seen around.
