Idle Rev Range

Replaced my alternator (reconditioned) over the weekend, the car had no power for about two days. When I started the car it comes to life for about 30 secs then the revs just plummets down to zero and the engine turns off. I guess the ECU is re-adjusting it self, I tried it a couple times same thing happened.
I adjusted the idle meter, now it's working fine but it idles at 1,000rpm is that a bit high? I been reading past threads that the idle should be around 500-700rpm. I'm afraid that if I adjust the idle meter the car would stall.
Off the subject (didn't want to start another topic), Iridium sparkies, are there different types, my FTO has mivec and wanted to get new sparkies, got quoted at $19.95 per plug inclusive of GST.
Cheers
