Hey guys,

Replaced my rev counter a while back from a wrecked TIP FTO (can't remember 4 or 5sp). Mines a 5sp manual. Now, pretty sure the rev counter is reading too low. Reading fine when idling though.

Would someone with a manual mind letting me know what revs they get doing 100kmph / 60mph in 5th gear? Just to make sure i'm not being paranoid!

And is there a way to recalibrate to my car, or should i be trawling the wreackers for a manual?

What size rims & tyres are on your car?

17's with 215/40's on front

with stock wheels on a GPX @ 100km/h it should be sitting pretty much dead on 3000rpm in 5th gear if your car is a manual.

Stock - the FTO dashes are calibrated according to theses tyre sizes:

GS: 185/70R14
GR: 195/60R15
GPX: 205/50R16

If you punch those numbers in this tyre size calculator vs your current rim / tyre sizes you'll see the speedo variations you can get.

They can be recalibrated, but I dont know where unfortunately

I wouldn't think the revs gonna make a difference with your tyre size...speed yes. is it smooth or does it appear to be sticking? has it got a stock face on it or a dial kit? There might be some restrictions around the needle area cos thats happned to me before when i changed my dials...it worked funny...cos something was just touching it.

Has got some new dial faces yes, but have checked for that. Have made sure that there's nothing catching - no sticky spots, no rubbing, moves smoothly etc... idles at correct spot, just seems that it's reading lower than it should. Only thing i could think off is different calib for the TIP.

Cheers for the ideas though guys. Will pop out for a spin tomorrow and see if she's around the 3000k mark.

Hmmmm... must be different calibration methinks. I know mine's a GR, but think this is a little out:

100kmh in 5th gear = 2500rpm.

Rev limiter hits just before 6000rpm.

Cheers guys, don't think I'm going to worry about it too much, just nice to know how much it's out by. Will keep an eye out for a manual rev counter though.

I'm sure there are plenty of speedo correction places around NZ. There's enough here.

Would they be able to do much though? It's not as if it's a matter of moving the rev needle to the right spot, as it's going to be out by a different amount at different revs...

Its not a pyhsical moving of anything, the speedo is governed by electronic pulses. A matter of recalibrating that.

bearing in mind if the car is cold it wont rev much past 6000rpm anyway aye?

if you compare a 16 inch stock wheel the a 17inch 215/40 the rolling diametre of the 16 inch is actually bigger than the 17 inch. So really your speedo would be reading quicker than what you are actually going.
