now, there doesn't seem to be an air filter box for it. should there be one?
should i find an aftermarket one? what options are there?
can a stock air filter be suitable?

Have been a few homemade ones on here i seem to recall... otherwise UAS do one that simply bolts on.

EDIT: And no, you don't really need one - but some sort of heat shield would keep the hot air from the engine getting sucked in.

UAS have got a plastic one thats kinda expensive for what u get and it doesn't seal ... if u have the know-how make one up your self to cover it...if u cbf...get some windscreen heat shield and make a barrier between the pod and then engine bay to help reflect the heat...works a treat and costs u $5.

but u should really get a box and seal it up.

having it open, does it affect performance in any way?

yes. a sealed box is better as it helps push the cold air through the filter rather than require it to "suck" it up. also the sealed boxes ensures the air going into the TB is kept cold i.e not hot engine air.

Defects are normally issued for one of two reasons: potential safety issue or potential emissions issue. Apparently they feel pod filters kill too many forrests...
