WELL!

after 3 weeks of on and off rebuilding of my engine, last night at about 7pm the last rubber hose was connected and it was DDAY for my engine....

so i popped the key in.... and after a short moment of the engine trying to get fuel into the bastard... NER-NER-NER-NER-NER-NER...

VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM

:D :D :D :D

she kicked over and with a great roar of power the Lemon-Toe was reborn... no leaks... BRILLIANT!

so i took it for a quick spin to put some more gas in it and burn off all the grease and sh*t off the exhaust manifold and returned to my olds house to say goodbye and begin my 3 hour drive back to my home...

so i left at about 8pm.... crossed through town... hit the drive through (because i could :D ) and about an hour into the drive i had a grin from ear to ear.... i missed the handling, the look, the power.......

power......

power????

im losing performance..... 8O

hour and a half into the drive and above 4000 revs theres a clattering going on in my engine bay...... OH sh*t

i slowly reduced my speed down to 50kph over a half hour period and pulled into geraldine at about 10 clattering like a motherfuck... and as i went round a turn off at about 30kph it died.... PAS and PAB were lost and it just switched off.... so i pulled up on the side of the road and tried to restart.... CLATTER CLATTER CLATTER.... sh*t not a good idea.... temp gauge was 3/4 of the way up.... so i had to ring dad to come get me....

at midnight he arrived and checked everything in the engine bay, no lose hoses, radiator was full.... but the engine was f**king hot... so i restarted the engine and it purred under idle... but once i brought the revs back up the clatter came back... sounds like its in the top half of the engine... cams or something...

so im back to square 3 basically..... i think i should have invested in that second hand engine.... oh well

so yes, i abandoned the fto in geraldine for the night and dad brought e home... got home at 1am.... slept for a bit then dad left at 6am to make the 3 hour journy back to chch to pick up a trailor to make the 2 hour journy back to my car and then back to christchurch again to begin stripping it down...... AGAIN...

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not funny.... not happy.... i am so f**king ropeable, and thanks to whoever the f**k that little :edit: (Kazbah  )mitsubishi c**t was that designed such a shitter of an engine.... its been such a bitch to work on and its all amounted to f**king NOTHING!

so yeah...

not happy...

Big shout out to my dad, hes worked some bloddy long hours on the fecker helping me out and chasing me around the south island saving my arse.... yet again...

BTW i took heaps of picas of the rebuild but i left my bloody camera in the garage at dads place.... clever

Mike, with all the time & effort you spend on it, you could of brought another one by now. Since they are dirt cheap in NZ.

But crap, i feel for you bro, nothing worst then when you thought you fix up one thing, another follow. :?

did you check the oil level when you pulled over? - if the radiator was all good and the engine was just getting hotter it would have been due to increased friction everywhere

as soon as i read you began the 3 hour drive i thought hmmm what if somethin goes wrong :(
sorry to hear man

SOunds similar to what went wrong with my last engine, but I have yet to strip that down to find out aswell. Still sitting in the garage.....

When you do find out, I am sure that you will let us all know!

Oh, and I went through all the feelings you are Schumie - was looking at all kinds of cars, but then, when I calmed down - after about a month - I realised that the FTO is unique, fantastic car. Sure, you have had an engine break - thats just bad luck I guess - but the car makes you feel special every time you get in it. Try that in a skyline or WRX - they are just cars - quick ones, admittedly, but there isn't the feeling there.

And lets face it - when you spend most of your time doing the speed limit or less, its which car makes you feel the best that wins in my book.

yeah... im sick of it but i love it to bits..... lots and lots and lots of bits.... ive had a million things running through my head as to what went wrong.... something has to have seized for it to overheat with water in it right? i mean the water pump is still running and the bloody thing is running on all 6.... i just have rotten luck!

yeah well im thinking i might just go back to plan a) and buy another engine
ive spent roughly $1200 just fixing and rebuilding it in the first place... but its only $1300 for a second hand motor....

need money bad now.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck dude!! Dont give up on the FTO!! :P

You may find it is related to a bearing in the engine, but that is just a guess. The knocking/clattering sound is at the top end, but the problem is at the bottom.

Cause, having heard your tale of woe - not so keen on rebuilding the one I have now!

yeah it sounds like a big end to be honest but i know its not cause its running on all 6 fine.... theres no missfire or anything...

but ive made a decision.... im dropping a new motor in it

OH!

dad rang me this arvo and said when he was loading the fto onto the trailor he ripped the bottom off the front bar..,..!!!! of course!!!! what else!!!???!!!

if your going to drop a new engine in... what not drop something with more flavour in? like the 4g63 or 6a13?

Well...

1. Money I am sure is a factor by now
2. Without MIVEC it just isn't an FTO (sorry to GR owners reading this, but you know what I mean)
3. FWD turbo = bad idea IMO

exactly.... plus...

4. Insurance
5. Time
6. fabricating parts that dont fit
7. Petrol
8. potential problems in the future

severeral other things im sure....

but never the less, its an 11 year old car, its always gonna have problems.... but if i dump a 7 or 8 year old engine in that will fit perfectly and have another 2 years driving before something else fucks up would be a dream...

and im dreaming
