My poor 6A12 Mivec... Not 100% sure how i happened. Was flogging a little bit.... then.... bang.......clunk clunk clunk....sh*t...smoke.....tow truck...3 months later.......cha ching...fiddle fiddle....cha ching....cha ching..... VROOOOOMMMMM!!!!! new engine....
Anyway heres a few piccies of the damage.... i dont know what the inside would look like but it wouldn't be very pretty.

Just for good measure.... I dont have any photos of the other hole... but there was another one about the same size elsewhere on the engine.
Morale of the story.... dont push an engine with 158,000km into mivec too often... or else buy a new engine.... BTW the new engine only has 80,000... im quite happy... apart from loss of $$$...

Dude!! What is it with all these busted motors! Thats worse than posters... what was the end result of that? Spit a rod?

Well sorry to see what had happen, but I guess it can happen to anyone & any engines.

As long as the engine been regular service & maintain since day one (so not just you but the previous owner as well) then it shouldn't be a problem hitting MIVEC regularly even if it’s done 200000km+

i dont know much about motors but i dont see how regular servicing can protect against somebody revving an old motor and the bottom end falling to bits..

I think the problem is a combination of
-old motor (150k's plus) (like mine)
-standard, not-completely balanced bottom end (like mine)
-pushed into very high revs 8-9k like a race car a lot (bit like mine)

I guess if your going to do something you may as well do it right!! The way I see it, the only way you could have improved on that was to manage to send the shards through your bonnet and side panels.

At least the damage is easier to determined

I just remembered a photo that I saw on the Gibberish section few months ago. There was a truck on a drag strip, the end result was the engine split in to two parts, with bits and pieces were coming out of everywhere.

I use engine oil as an example.

Engine oil primary function is to lubricate the engine in order to protect it from wear & tear. Once the engine oil gets dirty/old it will lose its effectiveness, hint why we change engine oil. If you don't change it, & still drive it like crazy (normal in most of our cases ) then you will increase of the chance of a worn motor regardless of the km you have done.

Now that just base on engine oil & then of course your also have coolants, belts, filters...& so on.

yeah but what i meant was how does oil effect heavy stock/unbalanced bottom end parts from shaking apart (if thats what caused them to fail)
changing coolant,belts and filters couldnt possibly effect it..

im gettin worried cos my car has done a lot over 150 thousand ks aswell and is going on to do a few laps on a race track in a month or so...

Hmmm i thought my answer was pretty obvious.......... Maybe Ben & Dannyboy would like to right an article to help you out.

Or what you do is, don't service it & get a new motor every 20000km

No. I would've loved to seen inside. would've been a helluva mess. i found the bottom U piece of the conrod on the road. it was so fucked. Its back at home but when i get it sent up i'll take some fotos. The internals would've been right royally f....uhhhh not good.i bought the car with 130,000kms. the girl said it was serviced regularly and new timing belt etc. but by the looks of it it had the original. not happy.... but it was fun doing it... Oh and some of the pieces that flew out bounced off the road and punctured my exhaust. another came out and went through a tyre. lucky i had a wide road with no cars.. 200km/h and ya lose ya left rear tyre. was like i was in a drift challenge... i think the brown stains are still on the seat.

So your up for a new seat too!
