If you aren't doing any other mods to the car, why change the one you have now?

If you change the airbox to a pod type filter the standard BOV will get louder. I am not sure how sensitive the AFM on Evo's are but if you put a atmo BOV (the ones that vent to the atmosphere) it may cause problems like overfueling and stuff.

I recommend you stick with the stock one, unless you start running mega power. Like I said with a pod filter you'll hear the BOV quite nicely.

If you must/want get a BOV, I think you should get the GFB stealth FX. They are quite expensive at around $500 but you have a choice of venting to atmo or plumback. So you can set it just right for both sound and no problems with the AFM.

You can buy a cheaper $200 BOV which will be really loud, but if it causes problems with the AFM it's wasted money.

thanks for the advice spetz
i'm planning to leave the car stock...as its a big incrase in performance from the fto
so...i only want BOV for the ricey sound
i heard it in a s15 the other night and it was amazing.
but if it causes me problems, i'll leave it at that.

unfortunately BOV's do nothing to increase performance, they are only for effect as they release the excess pressure built up by the compressor, therefore wasted enegy, the only way to achieve performance is to have a wastegate which bypasses exhaust gasses thereby not wasting energy.

I could be wrong but I believe the EVO uses an MAF sensor. If so it probably does not vent to the atmosphere to stop from overfueling since the air is already metered from the MAF, if it is then released the comp will still be fueling for it even though its not there.

The only BOV that seems to work with only minor issues isthe HKS SSQ. I have that on my turbo GX now and i dont really get any trouble and it does sound quite nice. But you would be better off investing in a vent to atmosphere external wastegate sine that would improve horsepower a bit.

BOV is to stop the back pressure (that develops when the throttle valve is closed ) slowing the turbine wheel down. It releases air so the turbine wheel dosen't loose much speed.

A waste gate is used to control maximum boost and can be used to control your boost curve if you have an electronic control

depends what sound of bov you want?
good brands that work properly

blitz (around $300-$400)
Image
hks (around $300-$450)
Image
turbosmart tyre 3 supersonic ($300-$360)
Image
GoFastBits (GFB) stealth (350-$430)

pretty much any other brands, break and leak boost.
so thats what i would use.
