Gents,

Im just curious as to whether anyone would like a DIY on how to replace them? Im doing my front bank on Saturday & wanted to see if I need to bother with the camera - as its a sh*t of a job as it is....

I know there is a pommy guide already, but it focuses more on how to get the inlet manifold off to get to the back set.

So, if you are thinking of doing this & would like a guide, speak now or forever hold your peace!

I'd watch where you going with that line of conversation Ben :P

And no, it's either schooner/bottle or mug/stein for my beer. Actually, I've been contemplating doing a little fun thing with the FTO Aus logo and a schooner I've got lying around.... 8)

ok pete.... enough with the sex toys...

acctually we dont even call them tinnies here.. if u ask for a tinnie your likely to be 20 bux out of pocket... sometimes 25 depending on the quality or whether the blokes a rip off :)

Are you cleaning or donig a straight up replace?

One of mine is a becoming a problem too, sometimes she'll tap all day. Before this it's just been for about 1 - 5minutes on startup.

Straight replace. Got a set come in from Kempys (front bank only - 12, as I've already done the rears) Was about $240 all up.

There really isnt anything to clean in there.... What happens is the spring loaded tips of the tappets seize when depressed into the unit. Couple that with the outer surface of the tappet being worn away in its guide, gives you that lovely tap, tap, tap noise. Sometimes when they warm up, the seized tip can free up - hence once the car is warm they can quiet down. You can also (and certainly not recommended) give the motor a big rev & it can free them up as well....

is that $240 just for 12 or 24 ?
do you have a spair set, by any chance ?
when you thinking of doing it, cause I need to do mine soon so I wouldnt mind learning.
How did you get them from kempys? I have sent so many emails asking to buy them, and no reply

$240 is for 12 mate. Unfortunately I dont have a spare set (I do have on old set but they wouldnt be any good to you, they're just as shot as the ones im about to remove)

Im thinking of doing it this Saturday morning (if they arrive on time) you're more than welcome to look on. Im not too far from you, im near Chatswood.

I just filled in an online order form with Kempys & they arrived in about 4 days last time. All else fails call Peter Lee over there - he's the man to talk to

Well i can talk about this as I've done it!!!!

Dont do it!!! Ive done the front bank about 2 times before replacement so i was pretty good at removing tappets. I was daring as will considering no one i know ever attempted removing tappets on an FTO. And my back! Imagine for about 6 hours bending over to get to the tappets!!!

I found it harder to do the lifters than the timing belt!! If i had the option, i'll change the timing belt before i ever attempt the rear bank of lifters ever again!

You got to be average to pretty good at fixing cars to do it!

Even then its a bastard!

The front bank is easy ive done it heaps!

But the back damn!

Requires the removal of the inlet manifold but thats not the hard bit!

You need to use big screw drivers to push down the valve springs. The rear bank is so close to the firewall you can get to the springs properly. You keep slipping etc and its stupid!

I managed to get it done, but would i do the rear bank again? No!!! Unless you have the proper tool its not worth the hassle!

Get the tool, will make your life a lot easier trust me!

Its not hard, but just a bloody bastard!!!

Front bank go for your life.

Its not hard here is a quick quide.

For the front, take off timing cover, remove coils, then rocker cover thats it!

the rear is the same but removal of the inlet manifold is required.

For you guys, tapping has mostly gone! But the damn thing still taps sometimes! Not really the result i was hoping for. Im going to try different oil soon, to see if it makes a difference.
