4G63 Conversion?

Hey guys,

I'm still driving a completely stock (as far as I know) 6A12, though you never can tell buying a second hand import and before I go pumping my money into mods for it, I'm curious to know what's available to us in the way of engine conversions. The latest issue of Hot4's did a section on the 4G63 conversion in a CC lancer, and got me thinking.

Now I'm not the most technically minded when it comes to engine conversions but is this possible? I did a bit of reading and was lead to believe this engine is similar to the 6A13 - as per Danny's and Jeff's turbo conversion? I'm just curious to know really what is out there, I've got a 95 GPX and I really don't get bugger all low-end power. It really struggles, most recently right through the power range until about 5k on all my gears. In all honesty, it might just need a tune up, but I'm keen to see what we can do in the way of Evo motors being squeezed into our beloved coupe.

Any info would be greatly appreciated as I'm keen to start doing some work soon.

Cheers,

Greg.

It is definitely possible, and has been done a couple of times. I believe there is a guy on the FTOOC forums who has done it (MarkFTO?).

Theoretically it should not be a particularly difficult conversion, but there would no doubt be a number of little issues to overcome. You would need a 4G63 from an Evo IV or later, as they are the right orientation with the FTO...

Given the time and money factors it is definately possible.

The one thing to remember is that the FTO is FWD, generating the power is really the easy bit, getting it to the tarmac is the problem!

Always take into account how an engine conversion will alter the characteristics of the car. Weight distribution will change and as such handling characteristics. Don't forget that cornering can become a little more dangerous at higher speeds as hitting boost round a corner aint a good thing
