Weird acceleration problem?

After I give some to the car, if I am in 2nd for example and keep the rpm steady the car starts jerking like the engine goes on and off, and then sometimes it starts making a noise from the exhaust like inbetween it missing and hitting rev limiter. This happens around the 4000+ rpm

Any ideas?

Mivec or non mivec?

You might want to get you're cat convertor checked out, or your O2 sensor.

I've had the same sorta problem on my dads old datsun ute, One night when I was drivin on the highway at 100km/h the car is doin about 4000rpm (old 4 speed), the enigine started to cut in and out, and sounded like it was miss-firen.
The next day I checked the important things like spark and fuel, it was gettin spark but found it wasn't gettin much fuel, I found out the car had 2 fuel filters, one in the engine bay right before the pump and one hiden at the back after the tank, found that the one at the tank was clogged and never been changed ever since my dad got the car.
I would check your fuel filter some thing basic like that could be your problems, the engine probably wasn't gettin enough fuel at 4000rpm.

Thanks for the help guys.

It is a MIVEC, and another thing is has is on warm up one spark plug lead doesn't always give spark to the plug (you can hear the car stuttering and that loud ticking of the electricity hitting elsewhere)
But it goes away after a couple of minutes, and is it possible this may be causing fuel problems?? ie. fuel doesn't get burnt, so the O2 sensor sees the car running very rich etc etc?

It seems like the car only does this after a hard corner? MAYBE only when turning right but not sure

At first i was going suggest that perhaps you'd blown a coil pack - but if it happens during certain cornering, then its most likely fuel related. Perhaps the pump has picked up some crap on one side of the pickup....

Easy fix in an FTO, just pull the back seat out & remove the steel plate that sits above the pump to get at it... but a lancer I am unsure :?

Ok took the rear seat out,
Checked under it and took off that service cap and took out what I thought was the fuel pump
Turned out it was just the thing that checks the fuel level.
Where would the pump be?

If you can give the chassis number, year model & type (like CB, CE etc) I can dig the diagrams out of the database :wink:

Where is this database?

I don't know chassis number but it is a 98 CE Coupe lancer (initially was a GLi 1.5).
This isn't my it's a friends car... (HRD2BQT's old car)

Thats weird. Or you sure. I was almost positive that ll FTOs had the pump the same place. The pump should be attached to the fuel level checker thingy.
Pump looks something like this....

Only thing I can imagine is that last owner had it removed and put in an inline pump somewhere? :?

Well this is a lancer not FTO...
But I was always under the impression that the lancer's fuel pump was there too???

Really need to know the chassis type to get accurate info from the database.

The database is available online from http://www.fto-ireland.com/downloads.html. Gotta warm you though - it is incredibly NON user friendly, both to install & use. Its also a cut down version specifically for the FTO. Both dstocks & myslef also have a copy - happy to cut it & pass it on.

Most CE types orginally had the old diaphram type pumps - the ones that bolt to the head & ride off a cam lobe. So me thinks you got an aftermarket electric one in there somewhere.

So the stock CE pump is in the engine bay? I think you must be wrong???


Regardless, in this car it's somewhere near the fuel tank as when the car is running with the seat out etc I can hear the pump whizzing from that area

The stock CE pump is bolted to the stock CE motor - of which you no longer have. So yeah, head for the whizzing noise.

you have a piggy back or something right...

just something we found on my car... when accelerating it got laggy as hell at one stage to the point where the car would stall........ spent 3 days on the car and ended up resoldering the connections for the RSM, VAFC and Perfect Power, which solved the problem... the sparkie said there was nothing wrong with my soldering but he was out of ideas...

check your wiring anyways that's the message

Yeah I have a piggyback but this isn't my car, it's a friends car and no piggyback

Oddly enough it has stopped doing it, and the car starts a lot easier now too? I am guessing it might be a faulty fuel pump wire, as the car doesn't (or didn't, haven't checked) prime when the key is turned to ignition but engine still off

How can I check it?

The car seems to have stopped doing it...
